Hi - I'm not aware of anywhere especially good in your area, and to be honest, I'd be surprised if there is anywhere - you can count the number of good espresso outlets in the whole of the UK on the fingers of only a few hands (so to speak).
Your best bet would be to get yourself to London (and head for Flat White in Berwick Street).

Thank you for confirming my suspicions... I've just moved to the UK but have been struggling to find a nice coffee shop for my espresso and/or macchiatos. Eventually I will be investing in a proper machine for myself but in the meantime I'm exploring on weekends trying to find somewhere to satisfy cravings. Is the coffee culture here more of a niche, or something that is young but growing?

How about a young, growing niche?
There's a recent culture of "coffee" shops, and I use the word coffee in its broadest sense. Starbucks, Costa, Caffe Nero and Coffee Republic are the big chain players, and they are truly awful (there was a guy on here for a while from - I think - a Caffe Nero who defended his branch, and I am happy too accept his word on that, but my experience of all of the above has been terrible).
In the last ten years or so, though, there has been a parallel development of a quality coffee scene, with a strong on-line presence (try toomuchcoffee esp. the UK resources page). There are roasters like hillandvalley and hasbean, machine and parts sellers like happydonkey and bellabarista, and a few cafe outlets around the country (very few and very far between) all of whom target and support discerning home users (as well as trade). We also have Jim Hoffman, who came fifth in last year's World Barista Championships, and who is doing a lot of good educational and research work (blog at jimseven.com).
In short, if you look carefully there is good coffee in the U.K. but you're not going to chance upon it.
