My father-in-law lives in the southwestern corner of Michigan. I'm wondering if there are any good roasters in the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor - Michigan City - South Bend/Mishawaka area. He occaisionally gets up to Grand Rapids or out to Kalamazoo, but both are a bit of a haul from his place.

I'm considering getting him a Maximo for Christmas, but if he can't easily get fresh beans...I'll have to consider something else.

we'd be happy to ship retail beans to him. we pack and ship the same day it's roasted, so he'd get them one day out of the roaster. i've not heard of any good coffee in that neck of the woods, you might be able to check the scaa website. they have a map feature that lists all scaa shops in your area.

Thanks for the map suggestion... I wouldn't have found it if I didn't know it was supposed to be there somewhere. (Warning to anyone else reading this: don't even try it if you're on dial-up; we have cable modem and the map interface was painfully slow!)

Closest place I'm finding that looks like it may sell roasted at retail is in Grand Rapids (Ferris). It looks like he could get green from an importer in South Bend, but I'm not ready to spring for a roaster *and* a grinder.

Will have to find out whether or not he's willing to get fresh beans shipped in... hmmm.

I personally don't care for Ferris coffees.  I find them quite plain with little oomph.  May I suggest Herman's Boy in Rockford.  It's just north of GR.  Nice folks, good coffee, especially the espresso gold and continental blends.
