Intelligentsia's Amber Sather does some last minute ironing behind the scenes. Throughout the comp, I was impressed by all the blood, sweat, and tears... this seemed to embody that.

Tatiana Becker, of Seattle's Trabant was my tablemate. Each competitor was given half a table in a secret back room to organize their stuff before carting it up and dragging it to the proving grounds. She was competing just for practice. Since she worked outside of the Great Lakes Region, she was allowed to compete and be evaluated but not to rank as a finalist.

Hanz Fritzen (8 months) sleeps as Steve Fritzen of Coffee Hound watches Ellie Matuszak of Intelligentsia Coffee do her thing. In-between them is competitor Lindsey Myers of Muggswigz Coffee & Tea with her six week old. If there's a parent / competitive barista out there who could explain how she managed to practice, plan, and perfect her routine with a newborn please fill me in.
A lot of coffee babies / kids at the comp. GLRBC 2028 should be HUGE!

Here's me before my train-wreck of a performance. I'd just completed my 15 minute set-up and was taking a final look at my cart before it was wheeled off. The judges would be arriving shortly. Anyone else got pics? I skipped the finals and took my daughter to Chicago's amazing Shedd Aquarium. For now, she likes Beluga whales a lot more than simultaneously served signature drinks... I'm working on her, though.

Oh by the way,
Jim's set wasn't a train wreck! He had problems, but he is learning from them, and I expect to see him compete again. He did have some of the best milk foam I tasted!

Sorry I missed the festivities! But had a great weekend of gigs (5 shows in all, counting WNUR-FM yesterday morning)! We need to do a Chicago-area coffee gathering and espresso pub crawl one of these days.

Hey Jim, Thanks for the nod to me and my 6week old son Rowyn- my name is Lindsey Myers though. Elisa Marchione is my coworker at Muggswigz coffee and tea co.. I didn't get to see you perform unfortunatly , maybe next year! With a newborn I didn't really get to practice my routine, let alone perfect anything, and it showed. Did alot of things I know better than to do because of the stress and nerves. But it was fun wasn't it ? And it was good motivation to work harder in the future. Take care. By the way you have a cute little one as well
