hi,
I'm in Austin only for the week, I searched the forums and the most recent info was from 2005, any current recommendations on a place with good straight espresso shots in the Austin area?  I'm staying in Hyde Park, a few minutes from Central Market on Lamar...
thanks in advance!

Hey batorok. Check out JP's java.. they have the only clover in the southern US.. they also pull a great shot of espresso. Also caffe medici is a good choice. I am not crazy about their espresso blend, as I have said before, but they carry many fine fresh roasted coffees that they serve in a press pot. These are top quality shops in any part of the country.

Enjoy your stay and shoot me an email if you need any more advise

Both good recs, but the baristas at Caffe Medici are on average far geekier--so if you want to talk about coffee, that's where to go.

thanks for the tips, I was only able to make it to JPS, pretty decent cup of espresso, and the decaf from the Clover was among the better brewed decafs I've had.  The baristi weren't outstanding, the Marzocco Swift takes much of their skill out of the equasion, though.  Maybe someday I'll get to try Medici, for now the folks at my local Open Eye Cafe in Carborro, NC brew a mean double espresso, so I'll count my blessings

Subject: Austin Coffee Scene

This seems to be the most recent thread about Austin's coffee scene.
I'm moving to the Bouldin Creek area of Austin (78704) on December 17. As many other CGers, I do get quite intense about coffee and espresso.
Haven't been to Austin yet and would like to maintain my addiction to passion for coffee diversity.

So... What are good places for coffee and espresso, in Austin? I'm interested in: local source for green beans, excellent espresso as close to my place as possible (including SoCo), cafés with excellent coffee (regardless of atmosphere), local hangouts for CoffeeGeeks, coffee-related events (coffee jam, espresso jam, café crawl...), and online resources about Austin's coffee scene.
So far, places which sound like they might be worth a try (including what has been said here):
  • Caffè Medici
  • JP's
  • Texas Coffee Traders
  • Teo's
  • Jo's
  • Flipnotics
  • Metro Espresso Bar
  • Spider House
  • Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse

What am I missing?

There are buckets of coffee retailers in Austin, and very very few doing things right.

In fact, I'd say your list is too long.

Two of the non-list-worthy places are worth checking out regardless of the coffee.

The top two on your list are a must-see.

The rest, it's pretty much up to you.  I like checking out every place I can as well.

Jason,

Thanks for the reply. I knew my list was too long but I'll still try all of them. It seems that both Caffè Medici and JP's are relatively easy access for me through public transit so that should be fun.
Do you have any hints about a local source for green beans? I hate mail order for this things like coffee beans and I just wish there's somewhere on the Capital Metro system which has a good selection of green beans. How's Coffee Exchange?

I have to agree with Jason... while there are well over 100 coffee retailers in the Austin area very few are noteworthy for the coffee alone.

places to hit near the Bouldin Creek area, that you didn't mention would be

Green Muse (great patio, I like to sit on the porch and have a beer)
Fair Bean (Just recently opened, and roast in store, you might be able to score some green here)

for the most part though, to really fuel your coffee passion you would do well to meet the baristas at JP's and Caffe Medici.  We tend to hit Dog and Duck for pint night n Tuesday or Draught House on Thursday night to kick back and hang out.

We also have started a monthly coffee professionals get together (email me if you want on the list).

look forward to meeting you when you get to Austin!
