Congrats to Doug and the rest of the crew at Intelligentsia! I love that fact that a spokeswoman for Starbucks had to comment on the move to get rid of "large".

Just another reason why Intelly is so awesome. They have my full support and I too got a chuckle out of the reaction of the Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts representatives (clearly they have no interest in coffee quality) but then again that's nothing new. Long live Intelligentsia!

Good for them!! I'm so glad more shops are finally doing this. I hope they are ready for the backlash they are going to get though. Working in a shop that only serves twelve ounce to-go cups, I can say that some people are set in their ways and will be more than ready to tell you why they need their large beverage. Loudly. Usually when you're busy. Thankfully, those types are fewer than the vast majority that will listen when you talk about quality coffee and why the sizes are the way they are.

Even a 12 oz latte is still a lot of milk, but hopefully they won't lose too many customers over this. If they did, it wouldn't be those that enjoy coffee for what it really tastes like and more those that see it, as Doug said, as just a "caffeine delivery device". Maybe people will just order two drinks to get the amount they want.

I just recently passed through Chicago and visited all of the Intelligentsia stores (note: none as great, physically, as the LA location). Still, what a pleasure. I noticed a small sign indicating their change in policy. I was glad to see it, but I also thought they'd get some flack. I didn't expect news stories.
The news story link posted here also had a poll running. Out of 1742 total responses, 60.8 percent agree with Intelligentsia's decision. That's great.

If you haven't been in the Broadway store lately, there are some nice new changes since this news story. The big menu board is gone from the behind the bar and replaced with a simple menu next to the register. I think I saw before that they were doing French Press and Chemex service and when I stopped in last night I saw a couple enjoying a Chemex brew while doing a crossword puzzle. The big suprise though was the Clover on the bar, I don't think it was there last week when I stopped in for beans. All in all, some nice improvements on an already great coffee shop.

Congrats to Geoff Watts for being honored as one of the Crain's Chicago Business 40 Under 40...he follows in the footsteps of Doug Zell who was on this list a couple of years ago.
