so we were asked by the Chicago History Museum to give a history of coffee on a boat. I don't want to give away a whole lot more than that, but we set sail from Navy Pier at 9am this Sunday. Seating is pretty limited (only 15 or 20 tickets left last I heard). To get on the boat, visit www.chicagohistory.org and click on the link for the summer sunrise (9am, not sunrise) java jaunt. We'll bring the coffee.

It was just great - thanks for asking. I tried to tell the story of how the two coffees that I brought on board, Colombia San Rafael Microlot I (a coffee to be featured in Saveur in the October issue), and natural Ethiopia Golocha managed to get on board.
I started at the beginning, telling both the legend of Kaldi, and the more somewhat more likely history of slaves that chewed coffee cherries en route to the Yemenese port of Mocca. I spoke about the spread of coffee cultivation throughout the world (including the fun story of that daring Frenchman, Mathieu De Clieu). I related of the spread of coffee house culture throughout the world, and also spoke about the history of coffee in the US. Finally, we discussed different brewing methods, theories of extraction, storage tips, and coffee rumors. The audience had 30 minutes worth of questions, many very insightful. All of this had Lake Michigan, downtown, and the Chicago River as a back drop.

Oh darn! I just saw this post and it's July 30th. :( Would have loved to have gone on that boat tour. I live 30 minutes away via the Skyway from Chicago...I frequent Navy Pier often (was just there yesterday).
Please let us know if there will be another one of these tours.
