and besides Caribou? I have a two that come to mind: Peaberry's and Bean Juice. Don't ask me about quality though. I haven't been to either in months. They're small-town cafes, but they are the better cafes in the area.
Do say hello to Liz if you are at Bean Juice for me.

Since I spend a week every Thanksgiving in La Crosse, I've asked this question many times. This past year I was happy to find that the wine store near my grandmothers had sprouted a coffee bar, and they were even open properly early...6AM! Javavino or something like that. Nice people, just getting started with the coffee business. Unfortunately the wine selection wasn't as interesting as it had been in the store's previous incarnation. This is out on the Shelby side of town, between the K-Mart and Quillins. There was another coffee shop not too far to the West, but I never tried that one. Anyhow, with a 6AM coffee every morning, followed by a few hours of bird photos in the woods, it was the best Thanksgiving ever!!!

Update: the Caribou Coffee is a bit far to drive and I thought the ones in Chicago make better coffee. I go to Peaberry's or Jule's Coffee (on Pearl and 4th downtown). Both serve OK brewed coffee (I admit I compare all coffee to what I get in the San Francisco Bay Area), both have free wifi and good ambience with locals and students hanging out, and late hours. Jules also serves homemade soup and scones; Peaberry's has small homemade pizzas, quiche, and other snacks. There is another downtown coffee shop (Uncommon Grounds?) but I was not so impressed with them.

thanks for the update. Thanksgiving is arriving fast, and I'll be there in a little more than a week. I have my fingers crossed that javavino will still be open at 6AM mornings. If not....i may have to try one of these others...or as a last resort I'll just bring my little Turkish pot and show the relatives how REAL coffee is made. Rrrrawwwrr!
