I'm from Kansas City and have zero knowledge of espresso. Typically, I drink lattes or cappas from Starbucks because my relatives give me gift cards. When in St. Louis one morning, I was on the Hill making my usual Viviano's run to stock up on some favorite items and I stopped into Shaw next door. I got a latte and was blown away. It was a far cheaper and far superior drink than at Starbucks with the full body of the espresso very obvious.
Now, I thought it was superior, but as I said earlier, I have very little to compare it to. If I'd gotten a coffee, I'd be a better judge. So do any espresso drinkers have opinions on Shaw?

Shaw Coffee? I've heard of it, but in St. Louis, in my view Northwest Coffee in Ladue and also on Laclede in CWE is the best espresso! They also roast and ship and it's good! Stage Left, NEW espresso place in Winghaven is good for espresso in residential WEST, as in St Chas County.

Have you heard of and tried Riley's Coffee in Fairview Heights, IL (about 15 minutes East of the Arch)?
click The owner/roaster is one of the best we have ever found. He also contributes greatly to the coffee knowledge/wisdom of the alt.coffee people. He not only talks shop, he owns and lives shop.
I had dialogued with him via the group and some e-mail till last fall when we dropped by on vacation. Best 3 hours of coffee heaven in my life...including getting to watch (and pester) him roast 5 kilos of espresso blend.
We dropped by the shop the next morning, and his baristi are the best trained we have ever seen in action. They know the equipment, how to operate the 4 group LM, including the PIDs that adjust the temp of the groups.
If you order a large capp (or any milk based bev over 12 oz) they automatically pull quads to build them.
Oh yeah...his wife makes about the most incredible fudge we ever found.

Cyrano's, an old-school St Louis staple, just re-opened in Webster Groves recently, and they do a good job. Northwest used to use Intelligentsia, but I have not been there since they started roasting for themselves a couple of months ago.

A wonderful store with friendly people and good coffee. But NORTHWEST COFFEE is what it is all about. I was a die hard Intelligensia drinker until NWCC began roasting their own beans and I have tasted everything in town. I am looking forward to NW selling their beans to local restaraunts!!

Ron, Since i'm living in clayton/U city I know just about every coffeehouse around here. Normally I drink lattes when i'm out so i can't really speak to the nuances of the espresso but. . . I do have a few favorite places.
Kayaks Coffee: on the corner of Skinker and Forrest Park Parkway (which is under heavy construction). At the northwest corner of forrset park. This is by far my favorite place right now; mostly because of the atmosphere which is very much like a ski lodge and the fact that the owners are always around and actually know their stuff. They don't roast though and the place really caters to the student crowd (usually full of Washington University students of which I am one). Kayaks uses beans roasted by altera. http://www.kayakscoffee.com/home.html
Kaldi's: corner of De Munn and Northwood. If this place was a little closer it'd be hard to choose which one to go to. Much more of your standard inde coffehouse atmosphere. They roast their own beans (not on site) and have quite a good selection. Their espresso blend is lighter than most - not a bad thing.
If you just want to buy some beans try Starr's coffee and liqour (just south of clayton rd on big bend) This is a great little coffee roaster/store with gormet foods and has good selection of wines. Their fresh roasted stuff is generally pretty good, but you may have to do some asking to find out what was roasted that day.

I'm from Salem Illinois, it's about 2 hours east of STL, and in the Salem, Mt. Vernon, Effingham area, the best esspresso comes from The Courtyard Coffee House, in Salem... forget the fact I work there, it really is the best in the area.
