I live in Houston, but will be in N.O. for several days in a couple of weeks. Does anyone know of a place that's worth going to for espresso? I'm going to be at the edge of the french quarter attending a professional conference. Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: I did a google search of nearby (uh, near the hotel) places for espresso - and the results were dismal. Unless I hear otherwise, I'll plan on bringing some travel gear and beans.

NOLA Native here. It's pretty hard to find a decent shot in the metro area. You might try Sucré in Metairie (next to Lakeside Mall on Veterans Blvd). Some of the baristi there were trained by Orleans Coffee Exchange, and they use locally roasted stuff, usually S/O. All shots are pulled on a Slayer, which is just nice to watch.
The Sucré uptown on Magazine is a much better atmosphere, but they pull shots on a Superauto, although they use the same locally roasted beans.
The roastmaster at Orleans Coffee Exchange gave me the names of some of the cafes they supplied which had undergone their barista training, but I can't remember any of them other than Velvet (which I think is near the WWII museum by Lee Circle). I've never been there though, so I can't testify. Good luck. And if you do find a great shot, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE update this post or PM me!!!

Well, so far there's nothing I've seen nearby worth trying. However, my Lido, Aeropress and a supply of fresh Brazilian Sweet Blue from Jeff @ Red Bird has been awesome! Still a few days left here! So maybe I'll stumble on something but I doubt it.

yeah, I didn't even see anything else worth trying. I did walk into one place, but when I saw what hardware they had, I knew it was hopeless, so I turned around and walked back out. I was sure glad to have brought my new travel set though!

there is a chain outfit called CC's but their baristas, if that is what they are, have poor technique and pull sour over extracted overpriced shots. Do not waste your time and mostly your $3.25 for a dopio, ouch.

Ron, I have never found really good espresso in New Orleans, and I've going there at least once or twice a year for the last decade (both pre- and post-K). Any place that I found that was good on one visit sucked on the next visit.
