Right now I am using a Yama vac pot.  So I drink a cup my husband drinks a cup and it is gone.  Well now we are looking into getting a bigger vac pot.  My question is for those who have a bigger vac pot what do you use to keep the coffee hot?  Please let me know so I can learn from your experience.
Thanks Dar

I don't have a bigger vac pot but I drink primarily drip (home roasted, of course!) as it's just alot easier to prepare & clean up, since I use paper filters that I just dump into the trash.  Anyway, I immediately pour the hot coffee into a thermos or "Coffee Butler" one of those thermoses shaped like a pot.

Hi Dar, You could use a wire trivit on an electric stove. I use the Bodum spirit burner kit,& or a small camping butane (I converted it to use propane torch bottles,(cheap!)handheld backpacking stove. It folds up & fits in a ziploc bag! I think it puts out 3,500 BTU's. It's similar to the one pictured here, that I bought from Canadian Tire,19 yrs ago!...

There is an interest in looking into this. Irene Luckett of Koffee Kompanions (makes those cool covers for press pots that keep them warm) and a regular alt.coffee person was poking the garden (along with Mark and myself) on perhaps making this (or at least looking at the feasibility)for vac pot carafes.  She was looking for volunteers to send carafes to her (which she will return) for a couple of months so she can do patterns etc.  This would be a Thinsulate insulater in a nice pattern that would keep the coffee hot between cups. I will be sending her a Yama 5 cup so she's looking for other types.  In alt.coffee she outlines the types (got the list from Mark)she'd look into.  Remember she is just looking into the feasability for this. She wrote:

  1. Starbucks Utopia pot, when it's not sitting on its base (Asking someone
to send this to you would be hard - it's not cheap, but you can go into a
Starbucks and scope it out for yourself - just measure the bottom "kettle"
    portion, with its handle)

  2. Bodum Santos

  3. Hario Nouveau (again, too expensive to expect people to send to you, but
I could do much more accurate sizings of the product, maybe snap some photos
and put the dimensions on the photos

  4. Yama 5 cupper - George is sending this.

  5. Silex 8 cupper, Silex 3 cupper, Cory 8 cupper

If you have one to send, please email me directly so I don't duplicate carafes.
Also, be aware, I'll probably have the carafes for several months because of
the time involved to do this and working around my schedule.  Thanks!

I met Irene this last week at the Perfect Peddler show in Kansas City. She's good people, and if you're at all interested in helping her with her vac-pot fittings, I'm certain you can do so with confidence.

I'd also note, while a cozy is one way to go, a thermal carafe is another. I'm very fond of the Zojirushi line of carafes... they keep coffee piping hot far longer than is really necessary. ;)

I'd agree with Doug. I'm kinda flush in Thermos products right now, but one that is rapidly becoming my "go to" insulated product is this one:

http://thermos.smartermall.com/product.asp?sku=1917980

I like this one best because it has a no nonsense, one touch lid spout (press the lever, the spout opens). It is also s/s inside and out. But the best part is, it has a matt gloss coating that makes it look a bit like Titanium (heh heh), and it completely prevents fingerprints and makes cleanup a snap.

$46 is a bit steep, but this is a seriously constructed carafe, and would suit many a decor. the 1.1quart size is perfect for almost any brewing device I own (I don't own any 12 cup brewers any longer).

Actually, I currently use a little Zojirushi  tuffslim. I can't say enough about this thing.  It keeps coffee HOT for a long, long time.  It's rugged, looks kinda' cool and if I'm in a hurry I can take the coffee along with me.  Being a lazy bachelor type, however, I like the Kozee idea (less items to clean) LOL....

It may seem too fundamental but the technique I use with my cheap Wal-Mart carafe works great. Run some tap water until it gets as hot as possible and fill the carafe. Let it sit while the coffee is brewing. After brewing pour out the water and pour in the coffee. The initial dose of hot water warms the insulation and whatever heat is drawn off the liquid in this process comes from the water rather than the coffee. This is simply a variation on the technique I used to use with my Stanley stainless steel thermos - I would fill it with boiling water to prewarm. This procedure allowwed me to keep a thermos of coffee in the car that would stay hot for hours outdoors in a northeastern winter.

I dont know how long you are interested in keeping the coffee warm but I do have one suggestion for you.  I find that putting a small tea light (candle) under my Yama that works great.  You don't want to use to large of a burner as that will scald your coffee.  I also would not suggest that you use this method for the entire afternoon either ...  ;)  Not only is it dangerous but you will end up with electric drip coffee taste (you know the kind where the coffee has been left on the warmer all day?).

Also, make sure you buy the smokeless candles or you will have to clean the outside surface of your siphon.
