Hi all!

I will be in NYC for a week from the 27th (already planning a trip to Joes!) and I am planning to take advantage of the great exchange rate for UK pounds (almost $2 for £1).
I want to buy a good starter burr grinder, but I have NO idea where to shop for espresso equipment in the city. I will be in manhattan, but I have no problem going anywhere the subway will take me.
I could even get a grinder sent to my hotel from a good website if the delivery costs were low!

I can spend up to $160 or so.

Thanks,

Declan

Hi there Declan,
You should definitely check out Zabars while you're in town.  They have a housewares section right above the grocery store, with a fair amount of espresso and coffee equipment.  Their website seems to be down right now, but the address is  2245 Broadway (On the West side of Broadway, between 80th and 81 St ).

You could also check out the restaurant supply stores down near the Bowery.  This page lists a bunch of them.  You're more likely to find higher end new and used restaurant equipment down at that end, but who knows?  You could walk away with a commercial grinder!

Enjoy your trip to the Big Onion.

Dalton

Thanks!

Thats really useful info, I will definately have a look.

I have run into another problem which I am hoping coffee geeks can help with!
The UK electricity mains run at 220V while in the States its 110v. Does anyone know if a transformer/convertor will be sufficient to make it work in the UK? I can definately step the mains down to 110v easily, but will there be any other problems.

Does anyone have experience of running a US grinder in the UK using a transformer?

Thanks,

Declan
