It was nice to get together with Cannonfodder (Stephen) this past Friday. Unfortunately, we couldn't meet at Aldo's or any other coffee bar as his time left in the 'Burgh was limited Friday afternnoon - so I had him to my house for some "home brew".

I just made it into Ohio when I hit rain. I had to stop at a gas station and stow my leathers in the side bags and put on the rain suite, then another 3 hours on a motorcycle in moderate to heavy rain and 45 degrees. Got a little cold.
When you get there, tell your barista that you herd about them on coffee geek. if you want my thoughts, look at my blog.

Intelly has a second outlet in Pgh in addition to our shop, this one in the Strip. Caffe Intermezzo is on Smallman in the last block just before it juts left toward Benkowitz (20th?)
Luke and Alexis are the owners. Nice folks - we've visited fairly often. The shop is tiny - three or four tables outside, no inside seating. They run a Nuevo Simonelli two group (photo here).
If you stop by, tell them Rich and Melanie sent you.

The best in the 'Burgh is La Prima (as Teme suggests) except I hardily recomend the original La Prima just a few blocks outside of downtown in the Strip District (the location of the traditional wholesale food businesses: meat, fish, produce, etc.). This La Prima is located on 22nd St. between Liberty and Penn and is the one La Prima most frequented by native Italians.
Aldo Coffee (also suggested by Teme) has had a lot of good talk - though I have not yet visited them.
Another worth visiting is Coffee Tree Roasters. Like La Prima, they have a few locations throughout the city - but the best is at the original location in Shadyside on Walnut Street - but they have another location in Mt. Lebanon where Aldos is located.
Will add one other place that should be above average - the Simpatico kiosk in the Regional Enterprise Tower (the old Alcoa building) on Sixth. Belle and Melanie from our shop did the training, so we know what they're capable of. They were using a private label La Prima blend.

I visited Intermezzo a couple of weeks back at the suggestion of Sam Pati (owner of La Prima). he told me that they made a pretty decent espresso. I concur. They are located just accross the street and down a few doors from his roaster on Smallman Street.
However, it is Aldo's with its "late" night hours (until 9:00 PM) and its nearness to my home in the South Hills that I visit after La Prima is closed (@ 4:00PM!!!!). I even saw Sam Pati's sister-in-law (Sammy) there a couple of days back.
