In DC, Starbuck is on nearly every corner and Cosi has the corners SB missed. But good coffee/expresso is harder to find than an unindicted congressman. Anyone had good experiences? Firehook is pretty good and Java House does well. Anyone else?

Thanks all! Following your suggestion, I went to Murky Coffee on Capitol Hill in Wash. DC (they also have a place nearby in Virgina), and since originally posting this, I have been there at least 7 times. Got some good advice and conversaton from Todd and several others, including Xavier(?). Picked up really good grind for my FP, RAWANDA KOAKAKA..KARABA SPECIAL RESERVE LOT. Ahhh! the aroma! I have been enjoying their espresso and cappachinos on their patio. Was there today. Many thanks for the compass to MC.

If you expand it out to cover DC Metro...
Misha's in Old Town Alexandria (on Rt 1 north about a half-block south of King St) has a devoted local following. Sadly, I've never been in... yet I work just a few blocks away.
The chain French cafe La Madeleine has respectable drip. Better (and cheaper and more) than Starblechs and the pastries are quite good.

Thanks for the lead, Melange. I love Old Town but, being dependent on public transport I don't get their as often as I'd like. But with this lead, on a day off I will cross the river and hit Misha's Thanks for the tip and hope you will get to Misha's soon as well as trying Murky Coffee on Capitol Hill and in Claredon. Bob
Back in 03-04 I used to commute weekly to a client at 313 S. Patrick - 2 block walk to Misha's.
I found their espresso regularly bitter. At the time I was in Alexandria we didn't have our shop yet, and I didn't know enough to time shots or look at volume. But I did know bitter.
Last year I introduced those same clients to Murky. They still go to Misha's for the convenience, but they buy beans from Murky.
I believe Misha's 'dedicated following' is due to their being the only joint on Patrick south of King St. And the muffins aren't bad.
To put it succinctly, Murky and Misha's aren't playing in the same league.
However, you might try Tryst up in Adams Morgan across from Meskerem. They had a couple competitors in the Mid-Atlantic Regionals, one of whom did pretty well. Ambience is tres 20-something and it's also a bar (as in alcohol).

I would definately give other shops in DC a try(I remember an Advert in barista magazine that said as much).
I still chuckle about the Tryst heavy metal barista who did a chai with a shot of espresso using the leftover milk from his cappas for his signature drink. That was hilarious except for those poor judges.

Thanks for the info re: Misha and Tryst. Interestingly, Tryst is a few blocks from my home in Mt. Pleasant and I go there regularly, often for breakfast with a friend on Fridays. But, I have never tried their espresso, so, that is now on my next visit agenda, thanks to you and this great coffeegeek.com. Bob
