Sorry to Michelle if her name is spelled wrong (Bradich?) I copied from the competitors' schedule, and I think they got it wrong there.
The SERBC Reception was at 3 Cups in Chapel Hill last night, and there was a scandelous development. Little Miss Action Barista had a bit too much wine, and then she tapped the pony keg, and proclaimed her never ending love for one of the finalist (who happens to be a married man). I got this photo of her when her friends were trying to sober her up with the traditional remedy of stiff black coffee.
And in the end, this is all that is left, a bus pan full of dirty dishes, some dreams made, some dreams shattered, some experience tucked in under the old leather belt.
Thanks to all the first timers, who held up so well under some really tough presure from very strong veteren performances, I mean you can't understand how superb these routines have gotten. It is not easy to pit one's skills against tallents and big as these finalist, and some competitors were looking a little down after the awards ceremony, but just think about what kind of beans it takes to throw your hat in this ring.
Kyle- thanks for the better shot of Matt's blind pour, keep bringing it to the mountain folks.
Michelle- thanks for letting me photograph you washing your dishes, it is not undignified for a Barista to clean up, we do it all the time. And people, Michelle puts on a fast show, she had almost two minutes left over just to clean up her station before calling time.
Even the finalists have to wash their own dishes, in the mop room no less. Here is Michelle "Licketty Split" Bradich rinsing off her Moca Browns. She never did say what was in her secret sauce, and I knew better than to ask her.
Is competing (complete with camera crew) and filming as he competes for a new show. Bob Blumer finished SECOND in the prelims. Tomorrow the finals go. The show they're filming for is not the Surreal Gourmet, but some new reality show Bob has developed. Amazing job - Sammy trained, and committed to going to Japan for Canada should he win.
Sorry for the semi hijack - again big congrats to Nick and to Daryn and Lem and all the competitors for their passion and expertise.
Congratulations Nick & All. It was my expressed desire to make it but I had some thick headed circumstances that kept me away. In the end I washed out my weekend and really should have been there. Keep kickin butt. Hope to see you contend in Long Beach Nick!

My team did win the Barista action figure, which I placed on my machine during my performance to day. I think I did very well, having pulled what I thought were pretty good shots for the most part, and coming across in a relaxed and well spoken manner. There was just the issue of going 2 minutes and a couple of seconds over 15 minutes, which gets me disqualified I believe, that marred an otherwise respectable performance.
Here is a little eye candy for those who are interested. Byt the way, she is female, she has mammary glands under that green apron. That particular shade of green seems so familiar, I just can't put my finger on it.
For me, seeing that barista action figure here and hearing about her sitting atop your machine during your performace and seeing her, "Go for Cho," is all very surreal.
The real-life model for this action figure is the barista who had my current job before I did. She was/is a first-rate barista, super-talented at milk texturing and able to throw down some damn fine latte art. Oh yeah, her shots rock too!
Just wanted to let you know that this is no PBTC but a true coffee soul.
Congratulations to all involved at the SERBC. I too *heart* Nick Cho!
