Murky coffee sells Counter Culture Espresso Toscana roast under it's own name. I buy a bag each week. They get a shipment every Friday sometime and it costs around $12. Usually the beans have been roasted on that Wednesday. I've tried Black Cat as well, but I like Espresso Toscana better--just a matter of personal taste. It's also cheaper since no shipping as I live 4-5 blocks from the Arlington Murky Coffee--there is also one on Capitol Hill.
Murky is a very good shop and I highly recommend. Try a drink there before buying as the Espresso Toscana is what they use for their espresso.

I know that Whole Foods Markets in the Chicago area sell Intelly coffee. Are there Whole Foods in the DC area? It may be worth checking.
While I have the attention of some DC area Coffeegeeks, can I ask for a coffeeshop recommendation? I'm going to be in the Dulles area next week for three days (office is in Reston, Hotel is in Herndon. Is there any place worth going in that general area?

The Whole Foods in North Carolina are now also carrying Intelligentsia. I don't know what the lag time is between roasting and shelving, but for espresso it is not even mature for the first few days. So if you have Whole Foods in DC, you probably can get some Black Cat in it's prime.

thanks i'll check out whole foods. I am a regular at Murky the one by Eastern Market (well i have been busy so i havent had a chance to go back and eat one of those kick ass muffins or chocolate Croissants and sip my classic capp) i buy the beans all the time but i just wanted to try Intelligentsia as I have never tried it. cheers

hey ron. that part of no mans land as i call it..haha i haven't found any quality coffee shops in that area. you might have to just take the Alex MKII as a carry on and set it up at the hotel...haha...yes i know that would be more like the allowed weight for an international flight..haha

There is store-front roaster/coffee shop called Beanetics that just opened a couple of weeks ago in Annandale. That is just a bit south and east of where you'll be, so shouldn't be too far if you have a car while your here. Can't give rec, as I haven't gotten over there myself yet. It's a bit of a haul for me coming from D.C. proper, where, yes, it is pretty much impossible to get a decent cup of joe, which is even more painfully evident to me having just spent a week in SF.

According to Mapquest Annandale is 19 miles from Herndon, so that would be OK for after work. I will have a car so I may check that out. I travel to the Reston area about every three months and so far all I've found is Starbucks and Caribou. Thanks for the suggestion!
JV... Was it you who had to carry the Alex box up 6 flights of stairs, or was that one of the other new owners? I can't imagine trying to take Alex with me on a trip! :) i do take fresh coffee, a hand grinder and an Aeropress with me, so I'm not lacking for good coffee. I was just hoping that there would be someplace close that i could try out.

haha yes Ron it was me who had to take that massive alex up the stairs...it was truly insane. but someone had to do it. surprsingly i wasnt sore in the morning haha. well maybe alittle. how's the alex treating you so far? really well i hope. oh and i managed to get a cap for the end handles of the portafilters. its a pretty tight squeeze but it looks good. i went to Lowe's and I think it was in the hardware section aisle 16 or 17.
