Just got back from a week in Kitty Hawk, and found a nice little roaster/coffe shop at Front Porch Cafe. The espresso drinks I got there were quite good, and the atmosphere is friendly. I didn't get a chance to sample any of their roasts beyond the one they serve as espresso.
They have an interesting setup, sharing space with a bead store and a paint-your-own ceramics place that's a great way to kill a rainy day with the kids. Only drawback to the setup is that sometimes there's a chemical smell from the ceramics shop that overshadows the smell of the coffee.
I went to the Outer Banks expecting that I might have to settle for Starbucks if I got desperate for a coffee fix. (The whole point of going was to get away from It All...) The Front Porch Cafe was a very pleasant surprise.
You should also check out Muddy Waters in nearby Elizabeth City. They have a number of competing Baristas pulling shots. Great coffee, nice people, good vibe. They are located in a cool old gas station.
