Subject: PHILLY - Advice on buying beans for espresso

I am new to the "home espresso" scene - I just got an espresso machine (Gaggia Coffee) and grinder (Gaggia MDF).  I have everything I need EXCEPT coffee beans.

Can anyone suggest a good bean / good place to buy beans?

I need to "practice" my espresso making - so maybe not the most expensive beans in the first few tries?

I live in Center City - it would be nice to find a place to buy coffee that I can walk to.

Thanks!

SpH

Any any other advice to people who are new at this - that would be great!

Howdy,

Best espresso you could get within walking distance in Center City would be the Whole Foods on South St between 9th and 10th. Whole Foods recently began selling Crescent Moon's Breakneck Espresso Blend and I'd have to say that while they're a Jersey roaster, they're one of the best in the Philly area.

welcome to the scene! (i'm fairly new myself)

another place i would recommend within walking distance is LaColumbe on 18th or 19th (i forget) inbetween walnut and chestnut.
they're not the best (from what i've heard) but it is some quality stuff imho.

Chestnut Hill Coffee Co.  We fresh roast coffees from around the world and we are only an R8 or R7 train ride away.  Good luck on your quest for the elusive  bean.
