I'm looking to move from Charlottesville VA to Asheville NC and I'd love to get a great job at a for real coffeehouse. I've been a barista for about 5 years at a few different places and consider myself something of a pro. Does anyone have the inside scoop on the Asheville coffee scene? I'd love to hear what you've all got to say!!!

And before you leave, tell me what your favorite Cville places might be. I'll be there in early October to visit a friend in Staunton and then to Cville for my mom's 90th bday.

Been to Izzy's 3 times over the last 2 days. First 2 shots were great, the third a little thin and ashy. Stopped at Octane in Atlanta today for an excellent macchiato. Some fine beers on tap there, as well. Off to Athens, GA and Greenville, SC later on a search. No ideas yet.
Been in Asheville for 16 years, and Izzy's is the best coffee ever to hit our scene. Good beans, and the barristas take great care in their craft - have only had 1 bad drink there (out of hundreds) since I first set foot in the place. Foam in steamed drinks is like shaving cream...as it should be, and crema on espresso is impressive.
The Dripolator in Black Mountain is very good, too, but their sister cafe in downtown Asheville (which was recently sold - no longer affiliated with original owner) is not quite as good.
In third place is Larry's, a coffee bar inside the South Asheville Earth Fare grocery store. They have good bean, but drinks are somewhat inconsistent depending on your barrista. I have seen moments of excellence from this place, but they have a long way to go to meet the standards of Izzy's or the Drip.
Gold Hill closed down when the owner died. A very sad day for Asheville - I am a hard core coffee guy, but the leaf tea selection in that place was really nice. Their espresso was above average, too. I can't remember the new name of the place either, but it has lost all of the old flavor, and is kind of a sorry excuse for a cafe these days.
I agree Izzy's is great, but the Dripolator Downtown is great also. The baristas at both places are well trained and they both use Counter Culture Coffee now.
