Opened a coffee house on Mar. 03 in Newtonville, MA.  It is called Taste.  I am using Terroir coffee and a 3-group synesso cyncra.  Shameless self-promotion?  Maybe... BUT, I also just want to get some real coffee afficionados out to visit so that I can try to grow...  Constructive criticism is always welcomed and a necessary part of growing and improving.  Ask for NIK, and see you soon my fellow coffee geekers!

Nick,

Hello & best of luck to you and your new venture. While it is unlikely that I will ever stop by (as I live in Pittsburgh) I hope that the local CG community supports you.

Flick,

I think they use Terroir coffee for their drip as well.  I haven't heard of it, but their website came up in google.

Good luck KRANKL!  I hope to come for a visit sometime late in the summer :)

Hope that helps,
-p

I will try to stop by soon, I actually tried to call a few weeks ago to see if you were open.

I look forward to some great tasting espresso at your place. I usually have to drive to Simon's to get a good shot. It  will be nice to have another place go to.

I stopped by last weekend to check it out.

I ordered a macchiato just for fun, as it was not on the menu.  The young woman barista did not know what that was, but the young man did; however, he said they did not serve them because it was too difficult to steam that small a quantity of milk.  I changed to a double shot and ordered a small cappuccino for my wife.  The woman, who seemed clearly to be in training mode, made both drinks.  I was pleased to see her carefully timing the shots.

I was told the espresso coffee was Terroir "Ethiopian" (Yirg I assume?), which I haven't had before so I don't have any benchmark for the flavor.  It tasted pretty good to me.

The "small" cappuccino was about 12 oz, and was a typical *$ milk/foam separated layers rather than microfroth.  I'll chalk the milk work up to inexperience, but I think that 12 oz is just too big for a 'small' cappuccino.

I'm going to keep coming back and see how this place develops.  I think they're off to a good start.

Fac10- I'm very disgruntled that I was not around when you frequented Taste...my new home.  I'm also horrified to hear about your macchiato, or lack thereof!  Im fairly certain that the young woman was Clare, a new hire. Let me apologize but also mention that training a Newbie is exhausting and takes time. The young man, geovane, is a remarkable Barista, so im intrigued by your experience and thankful for your earnest post because I will be correcting the situation.

I hope to see u back sometime soon and please introduce yourself. Free double ristretto on me and all the microfoam you can drink!!! Btw, we are serving yirg as espresso...

Cheers,

Nik

Don't be too hard on ol' Clare, it sounds like she's putting up the good fight and trying to learn...

Nik -- no apology necessary for minor startup glitches in what is clearly an operation that cares about doing things right.  I'll be back soon to see how Clare is progressing, or maybe you or Geovane will be on duty.

Hey Nik..

I live out in cow country, but at least twice a month I'm actually in Newtonville, and look forward to stopping in and enjoying a cup..

On a related note, I was wondering if you knew of any place in the area that does barista basics classes? I've been roasting my own blends for about a year now and been getting as much info online as I can. I'm about to upgrade my hardware, probably to something refurbished or used because I really don't have to budget to go all out, probably a Gaggia Baby off of ebay. There are a few places around me, but they are very retail based and not really geared to the home barista. I've read a lot on home-barista.com, which is an incredible site with great articles, but I'd like to get some hands on experience, and I think it just would be fun to do...

Looking forward to my first cup at Taste...
