Alas, The Vault as we know it is no more.  According to Brad, the staff left as of last Saturday.  I wouldn't read anything into it regarding the continuing demand for quality coffee in the city and environs.

Godspeed Brad, Drew and co.

update: I've been informed that the owners of The Vault intend to reopen it as soon as they have hired a new staff.  Best of luck to them.

'Tis a loss for the city and its coffee scene.  This was a fun place wth a nice feel and real freindly staff. The Orinoco beans featured at the Vault got my attention more and more over these past years as I "felt" (tasted) the roast mellow.

Does anyone know the details on why the vault shut down? (If we should be privy to that information). A friend received an email saying that all of the staff resigned and it wasn't sent by brad or drew, but rather by the guy who owns the building. He expressed interest in opening back up the shop again and it would be helpful for us to know the details. For if he screwed over the people working there such as Brad, Drew, Phil and others, it would be good to know. I wouldn't want to support a reopened shop that hasn't taken care of its employees.

Jake,
From speaking with them, it appears to have been a reasonably amicable split over a difference of opinion on how to grow the business, nothing more.  And certainly not mistreatment.

You can ask them yourself because (drumroll), Brad and Drew will be behind the bar here the evening of May 30 as guest baristas.

Just don't ask them to make anything with syrups ;-)

Hi all,

Basically we don't think it's our place as business owners to speculate on why a shop closes its doors.  To engage in gossip based on the he-said, she-said stuff makes this forum kind of like a tabloid.  If Brad, Drew, the owners of the Vault felt that it needed to be disclosed I'm sure they'd have put some sort of message on their website like murky did.

Thanks,

Alexis  & Luke

Actually, they closed because of the county wide ban on the consumption of caffeinated beverages. The new prohibition.

Dear Alexis, Luke, and Melissa
I am not seeking to spread gossip, but am mearly seeking clarification. Everyone on The Vault email list recieved a peculiar, vague message from someone no one knew. The message went along the lines of:

"The store has closed after all the staff resigned. Once we find new staff, we will reopen"
Sincerely,
Some Guy No One Knew (Turned out to be the landlord)

Several people on the email list asked for clarification to why their favorite shop closed. Since the original email, there has been no response. The vague email and lack of any response raised only more questions and made it more confusing.

I think anyone who knows me and knows my character knows that I'm not asking this question out of sheer titillating pleasure. From the strangely worded email (that the owner provided), I presumed that there was a major difference between the owner and everyone working there, for why else would everyone resign? If it was simply a difference in vision, I can understand that. However, if it was because the owner disrespected and treated the barista's with ill-intent, then I have a very different feeling. I cannot and will not spend my money at a shop that forces out barista focused on quality to hire on some bubble-gum chewing kids who pull 8 second shots of 'expresso.' Hence why I was asking this question, so that I could receive clarification over the issues surrounding the closure to know where my allegiances should be. I do not think it was out of line for me to ask this question on the board, for all of us should be concerned with what's happening to our fellow baristas in Pittsburgh.
