So it was a slow day today and I decided to do a google search of coffee shops in my home town.  The usual few came up, including Publick Cup (formerly Koffee Too) and Willoughby's (neither of which I have been too impressed with), but a new entry popped up: Jojo's Cafe at the intersection of Park Street and Chapel.  The review on yelp.com seemed decent, and the latte art photos on their site tipped me off to the fact that it might be worth a trip downtown.

When I walked in I saw a Linea hiding behind the counter, and the bottomless PF in one of the groups was the last hint I needed to know that I was in the right place.  When the lady at the counter asked if I wanted a single or double espresso, I just asked for whatever would taste better.  The barista, Bill, heard this and pulled me a double of their own blend, the contents of which I definitely cannot recall.  It's brighter than usual chocolaty stuff (a good thing for my taste).  Bill also mentioned that there was a citrusy hint in there, but I'm not too good at describing flavors myself.

It had been far too long since my last in-depth coffee conversation with someone who really knows their stuff.  I got to talk with Bill for a while about his technique, his coffee, etc. and now I can confidently say that New Haven has some great coffee, if you look in the right place.  I'll be heading back there when I'm in town and in need of a shot, and while I did not try a milk drink, I'm sure it would be quite good (obviously better than either of the two *$ down the street).  I hope someone with a better ability to intelligently describe coffee can head over there and post a more detailed review.  For now, at least, I'll say that it was delicious, and the lingering aftertaste of the shot was very good.

No, I am not affiliated with them in any way.  I'm just happy to see more serious coffee shops popping up.  Has anyone tried Woodlands Coffee and Tea?  Could you compare it with Jojo's?

Ahh, New Haven Connecticut.  Home of the first hamburger.

Been there with my wife.  A VERY unique restaurant.  Even had a show on it on the Food Network.

Ever been there?

I hate to embarrass myself in front of the coffeegeek community, but I must answer honestly: no, I haven't been to Louis Lunch or any of the other (semi-)famous downtown New Haven places.  I have, of course, been to Sally's Pizza and Pepe's Pizza (and Modern as well).  All highly recommended if you find your way here.  I'd suggest you go there as early as you can on busy nights because the line can be up to an hour, and once you're sitting, it's usually an hour wait for your pizza.  It's worth the wait, though.

I'm off topic anyway.  Thought I would ask.  I guess they are famous (Louis Lunch), at least in their own minds at least.  Ha ha.  Their burgers were very good, the place nostalgic.

Bill is a great guy and does know his stuff. He has also been featured on WFSB channel 3's morning program doing latte art. He, along with places like Fuel, are definitely raising the bar for coffee in CT.
