The first, and maybe the last, Crabs and Coffee Luv Fest is long overdue.

I love crabs and coffee. But, I've never had them at the same meal. May be an awkward pairing, so that's why this may be the last CCLF. Is anyone interested in having a crab and coffee meal somewhere in Maryland? Sometime before September. Crabs are expensive and increasingly rare, so whoever attends may need to provide their own. My buddies and I will try to catch our own, which we can meet up for, too. I can provide coffee for about a dozen people, but the more coffees brought by more people, the merrier.

Jay Caragay, of Spro coffee, had the interesting idea of steaming crabs *in* coffee.

Anyone game?

Yes! Yes! Yes!

(I would suggest perhaps steaming the crabs with a healthy splash of coffee-flavored stout, in a nod to MD tradition of tipping half a bottle of beer into the pot.  Also, the coffee pairing needs to not destroy the ultra-light sweetness of crabs and clarified butter. Maybe a lighter, fruity coffee with a nice "pop" to it and a clean finish. A Kenya? or a Yirg?  Crabs go well with light lager- which has a breadlike flavor, so if the chosen coffee has notes of toast/grain/mild earthiness, that could also be nice.)

Do we make that kind of stout ourselves or buy it at the store? We should steam the crabs a few different ways, for comparison. Some with just water. Some with coffee. Some with coffee stout. Some with plain beer.

Kenyans may be a bit too intense, but we should try it anyways. Yirgacheffe, Brazilian and Colombian are three others that I think could be complementary. I had a buttery Salvadoran that I'll try to bring, and maybe a mellow Sumatran. People should bring whatever they want though.

Awesome. And I suppose you're right. I'm in transition from Boston, halfway in spirit to my MD hometown, so on the Jersey Turnpike if I go South or China if I go North. But will be in MD soon enough.

I say we probably should leave the beer brewing to the experts. As fond as I am of my red plastic Mr. Beer, I'd rather we use a well-crafted commercial stout like this one, and play around with the coffees and crab-steaming marinades.

Of course, if a BeerGeek wants to bring along some home brew,  I won't complain.

So are we going to do this sometime in July? August?

Sounds tasty.

I can't wait either, so let's aim for mid-July?

Actually, if I remember correctly, you're a Terroir fan too. Their new Kenyans might go on sale in August. Might be worth waiting for.

Either mid-late July or August is good for me, I have no problem waiting for anything new and promising from Terroir, but I don't want to plan it for when others will be traveling.  Speaking of others, who else is interested in this, and any ideas for organizing it?
