I am going to NYC in a few weeks and want to take a friend on an espresso tour.  I know of only TWO places that I trust.

Gimme Coffee (NoLita and Brooklyn)
9th St. Espresso (East Village)

I don't consider 'Joe the Art of Coffee' to be up to par.  Are there any other establishments that are truly outstanding?

On top of your two trusted places I would also recommend from personal experience:

- Cafe Grumpy

- Everyman's Espresso

Just out of morbid curiosity, what turns you off about Joe?

The quality of espresso at Joe.  It was not up to par with Gimme and 9th st.  Lacking dark crema and not as much crema.  Joe offers double ristretti (which is OK even though triple is standard at Gimme) and it was just weak and lacking a complexity of flavor.  Their atmosphere and manner of the baristi seemed less focused on the art of espresso (just an impression).   The owner at 9th St. is OBSESSED with a good shot of espresso period.  Same with Gimme.

Don't forget Blue Spoon on Chambers St. Heather or DUke (?) pull really nice shots of Black Cat. But I'm with you on Gimme. Nothing compares IMO.

I must say that when I was at Joe the Art of Coffee two weeks ago, I had the best latte ever!
Perhaps it was the Barrington espresso blend which I prefer to the Toscano which seems to be everywhere.

Maybe Joe is getting better.  Have you gone to these other espresso bars in NYC to compare?  If you have and you think Joe matches up, then I will give Joe another try.

Try Southside in Brooklyn too; they are passionate about coffee & espresso and painstakingly pick everything machine and coffee they do.

what a great idea!! i might steal it and do it with my friend sometime too! I found this great website thats chock full of video reviews of places to eat and drink and things to do in the city. it's called uloveny.com. if you seach coffee or espresso you'll come up with some other options and be able to listen to why customers like those places. here's a review for 9th street :
Mod Edit: Commercial link removed!
enjoy!

I have set my espresso tour for the following:

Joe, the Art of coffee (Village)
Grumpy (Manhattan)
Gimme Coffee (Manhattan)
9th St. Espresso
Everyman Espresso

I plan order an espresso and a latte at each.  I will take pics and write a review of each.
