I recently ordered my first pound of Intelligentsia coffee. I thought to myself: "self, this is great coffee. You know what could make this greater? Paying less for shipping so it somewhat approximates the cost of a pound of coffee from a local establishment."
To that end, I thought I'd invite anyone to join in my next shipment in order to help defray the cost for myself (and you!).
My research has revealed that one pound of coffee costs $6.25 to ship, while three pounds of coffee costs $6.25 to ship. I think you see where I'm going with this. If I found just one other person, I'd decrease my costs by $3 every shipment. That could really add up. I'm happy to make the first order, as long as you promise not to leave me with 100 pounds of coffee, and as long as you can pick it up in center city.

Have you tried buying a retail bag at One Shot in Northern Liberties? They serve Intelligentsia. Or you could buy a bag from Chestnut Hill Coffee in Germantown, or a bag of Counter Culture at Spruce St. Even Whole Foods has a wide selection of very good roasters on the shelf (local boys Torreo, One Village, La Colombe, and I think Bean & Burlap too). You could support the local businesses and reduce your consumer costs at the same time. But if it is the fun and camaraderie of a buying club you want, then that is cool too.

Yes, I had thought of that. I did consider the fun and comraderie of a buying club as well. My main motivator is having coffee arrive at my office, since I don't have a car to get to CH or NoLibs and I rarely find myself in the Spruce St. neighborhood. I realize this might strike you as extremely lazy, and I don't disagree. But I know myself and I'd rather just have the stuff mailed to me (for the most part). Of course, I have all of those other shops on my to-do list (I do generally aim to support local business). In fact, I had a whole long conversation with the proprietor of Chestnut Hill Coffee on the street when, in true coffee-geek fashion, I randomly stopped him to ask about his La Marzocco t-shirt (Sultan - if you're reading this, I haven't forgotten to come by for a cup).
