A few posts back (and a few months), Ryan Jensen posted that he had signed the lease on the location previously occupied by murky Capitol Hill.

Ryan's (and his wife, Jill's) shop, Peregrine Espresso, opens tomorrow at 7am.  Check out his website at www.peregrineespresso.com or the blog (more info) at http://peregrineespresso.wordpress.com/

The shop is outfitted with a La Marzocco GB5 4-group espresso machine and serves Counter Culture Coffee.

I'm still working my bribery scheme to cross the river and get there sometime tomorrow.  Good luck, Ryan!

I am totally there. Publicized it to my MySpace and Facebook buddy lists.

Looking forward to some gourmet quality rocket fuel, and, btw, really good call on choosing to stock Askinoisie chocolates, guys. I tried that brand at a specialty shop in Pittsburgh, and it is really an excellent dark chocolate.

~tMb, already trying to decide what to order tomorrow

We stopped by peregrine espresso this afternoon to check out the opening.

Verdict: great coffee, nice people. What else can you ask for?

Eastern Market has a real coffee shop again. Murky DC (may it rest in peace) has a worthy (dare I say superior?) successor. I’d like to encourage all the coffee geeks on the Hill, or near the Hill, to get behind this shop.

Hi, everyone.

I am really proud to be open and serving wonderful coffees on Capitol Hill.  We are still finishing up a few details in the space but are really thrilled with the way the shop turned out and the staff that we have right now.

Frankly, I'm a bit amazed at how many straight espressos and macchiatos I've served over the past week.  I've been told that I have Ryan Goodrow (now of 9th St) to blame for training these hill folks right in the years since I left murky.

When I get a chance to charge my camera battery, I hope to update our blog site with some fresh photos.

Hello,

I'm new to this forum but I wanted to go straight to the DC thread and put another vote in for Big Bear. I spend part of my week in DC, and the apartment there is less than a block from Big Bear. I'm also from the Durham, NC area, the location of Counter Culture, so it all felt very personal and exciting when they opened.

They make excellent espresso and their coffee is french pressed. They also make nice sandwiches and the farmer's market (mentioned above) is on Sundays from 10-2.

If anybody is going to Big Bear, drop me an email and maybe we can meet up if it's mid-week!

After many excuses and much delay, I managed to sneak away from the office to hit Peregrine today.  Expectations met or exceeded.  Excellent coffee (had an espresso and a drip), and excellent service.  Had a nice friendly discussion about roast age with served and sold coffee (was there with another roaster friend of mine).  Honest friendly discussion, even with a question (what's the age on what your serving?) that could have been taken wrong.

Honest review that they would have liked more rest on the espresso blend (no complaints from my end, though I"m not a 'spro hound).  Relaxed, quiet shop (though I was there off-rush) with most of the outdoor tables filled on a beautiful day.  Now if I could just shorten the distance from work to a block vs. a bit over a mile...

Thanks Ryan, glad to have come by for the first of many stops.

I checked out grape + bean today in Alexandria.

I did not realize before I got there that they do not serve espresso.  They did have some fresh bags of Counter Culture Hacienda; but when I asked about Espresso Toscano, the woman seemed very confused.

How disappointing!  I've been trying to visit G+B for a little while now hoping to try some good shots.  Seemed everytime I went down there, though, they were closed!

A lot of people have mentioned Swing's - great place.  That was my favorite midday hangout when I worked downtown.

I've visited Peregrine several times now and Ryan and his wife have a great crew, a nicely spruced up site as well as coffee and service to wow one.  They were using CC's Espresso Aficionado and it quickly qualified itself as my favorite.  A long time Toscano fan, my conversion was of the burr-ning bush variety.  Peregrine and Aficionado is the best pair running in DC.  (No moose heads on the wall though).

Anything within walking distance of the Fairmont Hotel (2401 M Street, NW)?
