I live in Greenville, and the best espresso I have found is Gold Hill Espresso in Asheville. I've been to Carolina Coffee Roasters a few times, and I'm currently using their espresso in my home machine. I think it's ok, just a little darker than I would prefer. The one thing that scares me about CCR is the flavored coffee.....places that carry flavored coffee generally turn me off. The drinks at Coffee Underground and CCR are definitely better than Starbuck's and Port City, although one time I ordered a latte at CCR and it came sweetened for some reason. =p

I know this post has been quiet for a while but I was wondering where things stood in Greenville these days. There have been a few coffee shop openings on Woodruff Rd and in Taylors and I was curious as to whether there were any to get excited about.

I've heard good things about "Sip" in Greenville...I haven't had drinks there yet, they were closed the day I was by there. They do tea and coffee. It's in the downtown area.
Try Octane Coffee if you're in Atlanta, as well as San Francisco Coffee.
Everybody needs an addiction.
I'm not addicted to coffee, I just have to have a cup EVERY morning.

i've heard good things about 'sip' too -- for tea. according to the local food writer who recently reviewed the joint, they definitely focus on tea. there's another place on main street called o-cha that's a bubble tea specialist (the oriental, tapioca-bead stuff). but alas, nothing notable in the espresso world.
i've hit a couple of the woodruff road places, and they all make efforts at ambience, live music, house drinks, etc. ... but i have yet to taste a drinkable espresso. *sigh*
there's a roaster in travelers rest that runs a retail coffee operation out of the front of the building that's pretty intriguing: leopard forest coffee. fascinating because the people who run it are actually from zimbabwe and own their own coffee plantation there as one of the few white farmers remaining who haven't had their land seized by the government. they import the stuff directly, will sell green beans for $2 a pound, and i'm told they have the new 2005 crop in just now. haven't tried it. they're still learning the roasting -- their primary business -- while the actual espresso brewing operation is probably a lower priority, as far as income is concerned. draw your own conclusions. but they're eager to learn, and i may spend some time over there soon to do some cupping, barista demos, etc.
outside of greenville, i'd still say gold hill in asheville is your best bet for fine drinks. nothing in columbia.
lastly, charleston has a new joint worth checking out, a fellow who had asked around this forum for advice before opening. muddy waters, it's called. ghetto web site, but they brew the good stuff from counter culture in durham, n.c. they've been open since december and seem eager to learn. the barista i spoke to this past weekend showed a great passion for the coffee itself and attentiveness to presentation. the shots were decent -- i had a double-macc -- but could use some improvement. i'm convinced that'll happen, based on what i saw, and i plan to return on subsequent beach trips.

Yeah, I've been to Leopard Forest and they are more about the roasted bean. They only have a cafe to satisfy customer demand. But they say they are going to 'get the whole espresso thing straight' in the near future. I haven't heard of 'sip' and I haven't been into 'o-cha' yet. Downtown Greer has Hot Java and their espresso is hit or miss. I think they are using Leopard Forest's coffee, both brew and single origin espresso. I wasn't too impressed with my first impression of Spill the Beans' Woodruff location but maybe it was just grand opening issues, since I haven't been there in a while.

Where exactly is leopard forest?
main street travelers rest. take highway 276 (poinsett hwy) straight out of town, stay on 276 when it splits with highway 25, and cruise through TR on that main drag. you'll see it on the right. big sign. if you see sunrift adventures, you've gone too far. tell them ben sent you. ;-)

I know this thread is VERY old, but it caught my interest after seaching for "Greenville". Maybe I can get some help by bumping it with my questions :)
I'm from Europe but I'm going to Greenwood, SC end of December. Actually I'm going to spend New years eve in Greenville. I've been in Greenwood to work several times during the last year, but since I was there the last time in the beginning of October, I started my interest for espresso and bought an espresso setup for my home.
Greenwood is only 1 hour drive south from Greenwood so maybe one of you guys could tell me if there's a good coffeeshop in Greenwood? I would be nice to end each day at work with a great espresso :) And even more interesting for me. Is there a place to buy Barista equipment? This kind of stuff is almost half price in US compared to Denmark, so it could be nice to get equipped while I'm there on my last trip :) If not in Greenwood, can anyone recommend a shop with barista equipment in Greenville?
