I went into Manhatten for a business trip last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Friday morning we happened to wander into a place called The Noho Star in lower Manhatten. As we were being served I noticed the owner and managers were being schooled on the fine art of espresso. So, after our meals, I ordered a single to see how they were doing.
Verdict - Delicious!
I chatted with the waiter for a moment or two about the espresso and spoke briefly about the CG site. The next thing I know he delivers a stunning latte with probably the most perfect rosetta leaf I've ever seen! It was everybit as delicious as it looked.
As my luck would have it Vincent (?) from Victoria B.C. had flown in to train the staff. It seemed that the info Vincent was sharing was being readily absorbed by the management. They were very interested in everything he was saying. I'm sure they "get" it and will be behind quality coffee 100%.
Indeed if they put as much into the coffee as they put into the rest of the menu you folks in New York should have another great coffee place in lower Manhatten. Our meals were really very, very good. I would highly recommend anyone to go for the food and the coffee!

Anyway I'm glad I ran into you. We came to Manhatten on short notice. I had made a list of places I found here on the CG site to try to visit. But I wasn't the one in charge of the itineray on this trip. Maybe next time. And I'll definitly visit The Noho Star again.
A funny thing happened on our way over that morning. We came out of the subway and stopped for a bagel and a mediocre cuppa from one of those street corner snack carts. After we finished I looked around and noticed, just across the street, a cart that was titled something like "The Barista Express". I figured this would probably be my only chance to sample some "real" NY espresso. After all, if the guy had the guts to name his cart this way he must know what he's doing. Right?
Anyway, I get to the cart and order a double shot. The guy taking the order say's "Waddya want that in?"
I said "umm... how 'bout... a cup?".
"You want that in milk, right?"
"No, just a plain double shot of espresso".
"How's about sugar? You want any sugars in it?"
"Nope. Just the espresso."
He got this kind of worried look on his face and said something I couldn't quite hear to the other guy tending the espresso machine. The other guy looks at me with the same worried expression the first guy had. A bit more undiscernable discussion between them and the machine guy turns to start the drink.
A few minutes later they hand me the cup. I look in and see zero crema. If there was 1/2 an ounce of liquid in that cup you could've fooled me. So I said to the order taking guy "You sure this is a double?" And the machine guy happily pipe's up and say's "Actually, it's a lungo!" I smiled weakly and said "Great!" And quickly walked away.
The taste? Well, yes, there was a taste. Though not one that I would recommend.
Thankfully we came to The Noho Star shortly afterwards.
And all was well.
(Except, of course, for me forgetting that Vince is from Vancouver. Oof, how embarrasing!)
