Does anyone know of a store in NYC that sells high end espresso gear with a knowledgeable staff?

It's mind boggling to me that this would be hard to find in the city.

thanks

Chris Coffee in Albany is the closest major dealer that I know of. I bought my machine from them, from all the way down here in Atlanta. Give some consideration to giving them a call.

Whole Latte Love is in NY too, though I'm not sure they have a walk-in showroom.

I know that Chris Coffee has a showroom, and I imagine you won't find more knowledgeable staff considering they sell both commercial and "pro-sumer" espresso equipment, and Chris has 25+ years of experience.

I know about Chris Coffee and WLL,  but I meant in New York City, not New York State.  I live in the city and would like to go and see the machines and talk to someone who knows about them.

I have heard anything negative about these folks who are close to NYC but perhaps not close enough. http://www.1st-line.com/policies/visit_us.htm

Porto Rico Coffee at 201 Bleeker Street in the WEST village (They have a spot in the east village too).

I got my Silvia there for $400!   $100 less than everywhere else.

I see this is an old post but worth reviving. I too would love to know a place here in NYC... something like Seattle Coffee Gear. I just got my Silvia from them a couple of weeks ago while in Seattle on business... I would KILL for a place like SCG here in NYC or anywhere within a 50 mile radius of Manhattan :-)

Chef Central is "decent" in that they have a few of the tools you would need for a basic Espresso setup at home. They sell Rancilio line as well as a few other items like tampers, cups, knockboxes etc.

Thanks in advance...

I haven't checked but 1st Line is probably within that radius. There's also a place in Hillside NJ, about 10-12 miles from the Holland Tunnel but I don't recall the name and I haven't checked it out yet. If the place is any good, it's no further from NYC than SCG is from Seattle.

First off, let me say I love Porto Rico.  I buy my coffee only from them.  That said, when I walked into their Bleeker St location the other day looking for a tamper I was sorely disappointed.

Their response when I didn't see any tampers and asked if they had them?  -- "What's a tamper?"

Apparently only one person in the store knew what one was and that they even had one, only one.  They didn't know the size or much else.  I had to convince them to open up their display case so I could look at the bottom of the box and see that it wasn't the size I needed.

I'd go to them for my coffee and my loose tea.  Maybe for equipment if I knew exactly what I wanted and they had it in stock at the right price.  But they're no where near the quality of SCG.

I did come across a place as I was driving by this weekend. The address is 300 Bowery and they sell home and commercial espresso machines plus do repairs and service. They say they have 30 years of experience. I've never heard of them before, but was thinking of maybe stopping in just to check them out. Their website is HORRIBLE, but who knows. Maybe they really know their stuff, just not building out websites.

I've stopped in Porto Rico a few times. Very friendly staff, but they don't know a whole lot about specialty coffee or equipment. Their beans sit in barrels - who knows how fresh or stale they are?!?! But if you need to pick up some equipment - filters, chemex brewers, etc... it's not bad.
