Does anyone from NYC or the metropolitan area know where you can buy espresso cups from a store? I have been to like 4 coffee/tea shops in downtown and none of them sell espresso cups that are not your typical white cups or those clear glass ones. I wonder if there is a kitchen store that has more than just one kind of espresso cups. I've never seen an illy cup for sale, but I have seen once really ugly francis francis cups. This is nuts, in the city that should have it all, I can't find any espresso parts or related stuff - Not even a TAMPER!

There is a dish/glass store with a name like Fish Eddy's. It is on around 19th St. and I think Bway. It is on the west side of the avenue directly across the street from a Loew's multiplex. They sell all kinds of dishes and are not necessarily cheap. I like thick cups which they dont generally have but have found some buys on cheap cups that are goodlooking. Check it out when you're down there.

gosh so many places sometimes have various cups: zabars 2nd floor, forzano imports, two for the pot, b'way panhandler, even the student hardware store on university place what is that? around 12th or 13th? those stores on the bowery that are open to retail, like paragon. . .plus many upscale design stores in soho have them, like alessi on spring st. i think their retail space is still open, haven't been there in a while. oren sometimes has 'em as well. . .
selection differs and you never know if or what they're gonna have. . .but cups can be found. most people prefer the illy cups it seems, and thank goodness they have the current online discount (see my blog), which i think applies to cups as well. . .
online is really the best choice and best prices, imvho.

Thank you, that helps me. I will check out the more upscale shops once it gets a little warmer (like above 20 degrees). I have seen your site before and loved it - i'm into all those things except bread. Well, I love bread, but I don't know much about it. I used to do yoga on christopher street and they'd drink tea after class. While it was okay, I'd much rather of had an espresso like 20 minutes later.
i've never understood why so many yoga types are into the dead leaves. because many of their heros are coffee people. for example, did you know sri p. jois drinks 6 small cups a day with buffalo milk?
I like their signature checkerboarb pattern and the green band pattern. I don't see any info on ordering these from the web site in a demitasse however. I Know they used to have them because I bought the checkerboard cups and saucers years ago. The green band set is actually shown on the site in a demitasse, so I don't know what's up. I sent them an email to ask about availability and cost, I'll let you know what they say.
You should go to their store though. It's a very interesting place. They used to buy up over runs and imperfect lots of hotel china, so the selection was really cool.

the newest fishs eddy is not 2 blocks from my house, actually. for the most part, the demitasse cups they have are to my mind too large -- 3 and sometimes more ounces.
the so-called "cappuccino cups" they sell (particularly in the new york skyline pattern) are about 10 oz! the "latte cups" are 16oz!
but if you go in the back, they usually have the used diner china. this is the cool stuff, funky patterns, shapes, plates with the names of long-extinct country clubs, etc. there you can often get a retro style 6-oz cup for US$0.75. go for it.
of course the purists will insist that you avoid any flat-bottomed coffee cups. . . esp. for espresso drinks. (grin)

PooPoo to the purists! Lately I've been buying those 4 ounce looks-like-a-tiny-coffee-mug from the manhattan (chelsea) tourist places. They seem to be a series and a lot of them feature a nyc skyline. Yes, they are flat bottom and the purists can talk all the want LOL. they are great for 2 double shots (ristrettos for me) and have enough room for some whipped cream. They are like $6 each, so thats cheap.
I'll have to check out fish eddies when it gets a little warmer outside. Its been BRICK these last few days. Hey look, its snowing!
