Hello Steve,

If you are near RT 128 around Boston, you might want to check a little roaster off Washington Street in Woburn who will undoubtedly sell you green beans and talk second crack, etc.  I would not view him as a source about how YOU ought to roast, but he is at least willing to explain what he is doing.  You can run a mapquest on his location shown here

Another potential source, much more "upscale", is out in Acton. GHH Select which sells the Terroir coffees is shown here

I do not mean to suggest that either of these places is set up to serve the home roaster, but I suspect they will let you buy beans.  What you can secure will depend upon your own persuasiveness.  But they have beans and have show some interest in the afficianado.

i like deansbeans.com out of orange, mass.  dean roasts for a lot of local places, from greenfield to ptown.  his green bean prices are excellent, shipping is inexpensive and fast.  dean also gives back to western mass.  a good guy.

disclaimer here.  i don't know dean and wouldn't recognize him if i saw him.  only know that he does good stuff locally from an article i read in the greenfield recorder (local newspaper).

Hey Steve,

Here's another place that sells green.  I think their prices tend to be a little high compared to others.  I bought my first green beans from these guys around 7 years ago.  So they've been around for a little while.

Steve,
Sorry for the delay in getting you a reply - but if you frequent the Newport R.I. area there is a great little independent roaster down there:  Custom House Coffee is the name of the place . . . . run by a gent named Bob Mastin.  He buys green beans bulk from around the world & roasts on site for his local clientele.  He will sell you green, roasted, or ground (or brewed if you need a cup while you're there).  Bob has a nice variety of beans & roasts a great espresso blend if you want them roasted.  Bob roasts daily, so you'll find him there personally most any day.  This is his only shop, so it gets first hand attention.
Anyway, stop by to see him if you get a chance.  He'll be glad to tell you what he can about beans &/or whatever.  It's a great place to stop & a nice area to visit anyway.  We lived there for four years before returning to San Diego area.  We still buy our roasted beans from Bob via UPS, just because he does such a great job getting it right - none of the 'burnt' taste you get with some of the bigger houses.  We haven't tried home roasting (yet), but we do grind our own on a new Macap M4 (great machine) . . . . Bob's at:

Custom House Coffee
796 Aquidneck Ave
Middletown, R.I.  02842 (next to Newport)
