I moved down here 3 months ago and have yet to find any good coffee. I have had mildly acceptable coffee, but nothing that I would consider delicious. I just read the post below about Cafe Calabria which sounds very promising. I did visit the cafe across the street (Clare De Luna?) and the coffee was pretty bad. Also, Kensington Coffee Company which was so-so. My regular hangouts in Seattle were Vivace, Bauhaus, Vita, Zoka and Hines Public Market Coffee on Eastlake...so you can imagine how spoiled I am. I've been mail ordering beans from Vivace and making my own drinks at home versus going out.
I will try Cafe Calabria tomorrow. Other than that...? Any other recommendations?

Hey quasi!
What did you think of Caffe Calabria? I recently visited San Diego a few weeks ago and took a trip to the place on my way back to Vegas. I thought the double I had was pretty decent, however the only espresso I had to compare to it (before I got some decent shots from Code Brown when I got back) was from Starbucks. I asked the girl who took my order what they use in their blend and she informed me it was just their Colombian. I have never tried an SO espresso of Columbian before.

Lets see...where do I begin.... Okay gelato vera(little italy), Pannikan(old school San Diego several locations la jolla is best known), Zanzibar (in P.B)., Cafe Moto(used to be part of Pannikan) Now they roast for a ton of coffee shops but you can still get free great espresso's coffee etc when you visit, New Break Cafe, Pipes Cafe(encinitas), Mission cafe all locations(mission beach and downtown across from moto), Living room(La Jolla and Downtown), cafe 976(P.B.). I'm only scratching the surface If you need someone to show you around e-mail me. I am also a local real estate agent, welcome to San Diego! Joe

Finally made it to Cafe Calabria today...unfortunately they close at 3 PM on weekdays so it's been difficult to get over there before closing.
I had a basic americano and I must say it was definitely the best coffee I've had down here in San Diego. It reminded me of Vivace in Seattle. I just wish they were open later in the day. At least I know where to go on weekends. Thank you Cafe Calabria!

Joe,
Thanks for the recommendations. I work in Little Italy so I'll check out Gelato Vera. I'll try to find the Living Room as I heard they were voted "Best in San Diego". I may e-mail for more recs. Thanks again for the list...very helpful.

No problem, once you find a few coffee spots you'll learn to forget the grey/rainy days you left behind ;-D. Of course you could always attend one of the san diego home roasters meetings and you will be brought up to speed quickly. Joe
Oh how I miss the days I lived in Seattle. Rainy days, four seasons, and culture. Unfortunately I didn't find this site until I moved back to Vegas. :(

What??? Vegas doesn't have culture? what about Elvis, Sammy, and Deano? I've actually never made it to Vegas. Reno and Tahoe are the closest I've desired to try. Although a nice buffet and a good show are always entertaining. Funny thing, San Diego actually had more rain this year than Seattle. It was amazing I've lived here most of my life(except while in the military) and I've never seen so much rain. But its all good now the water is getting close to 70deg and the weather is 70deg its so perfect I could go surfing right now!!! Okay after I drink my coffee.
