Just an announcement, I guess - rather than a request for recommendations.
I'll be attending UCSC as a transfer student starting in January. I'm looking forward to the move and some new scenery. I'm also looking forward to an area that is more densely populated with Coffee Geeks. Of course I'm looking forward to taking some trips to check out cafes I have only heard of but never been to. I won't have a car so planning and public transportation is going to have to work.
The weather will be a welcomed change of pace also :D

Welcome to the neighborhood so to speak. Not sure what you mean by weather change.. Tired of all the sunshine down in socal? :)
I think there's another coffee g eek in Santa Cruz somewhere.
Of course I suggest making the trip over the hill to visit Barefoot. Not sure how you would get up to this area w/out transportation. I know there are a few busses that run between Santa Cruz and Santa Clara County. One is a VTA (Santa Clara Valley Tranportation), and one is Amtrak I think. This page should have more info, on Santa Cruz area. From here you can get to San Fran and check out Cafe Organica, Hayes Valley, Ritual, etc. If EspressoDom, Lorax, and myself ever get off our rears and do our bay area espresso tour, you're welcome to join.. (but don't hold your breath that we'll ever actually do it) ;)

Yea, I am tired of the SoCal weather. Sunshine... who needs it? I checked into average temps - Santa Cruz avg. temp during summer - 76 and during winter - 61. In my area it's 89 during summer and 68 during winter.
I have a friend with a car in Santa Cruz - I'll have to bribe him to take me into SJ because I really want to try Barefoot. Organica, Ritual, etc... they're all on the list. An espresso tour would be nice!
Oh yea, if anyone's in the area - you're welcomed to come by for some coffee and espresso if you don't mind taking it in an on campus apartment.

Sounds about right from what I know of SC. May be a bid cooler in the wintertime though. Weather is really great in this area.

Let me know when you're at Barefoot. I'll buy ya a cap to welcome you to the neighborhood.

Yeah, I may have to take you up on that. I heard on another board that yours was the best coffee around ;)

It might be the best, or maybe I was just being facetious because another member called his the best ;) Either way, I'm open to having people over for coffee, espresso, and/or a demonstration of my roaster.
I'm down that way a lot, so expect to hear from me. :)
I suppose I should extend the offer in the other direction, should you make it to this side of the hill. Of course, you can just stop at Barefoot and probably get something better...

If I lived over in Santa Cruz, I'd be awefully tempted to just hit Coffetopia and SC Coffee Shop every day. The coffee bar at SCCS is damned good; though nowhere near as good as Barefoot.

Santa Cruz Coffee Roasters is on Pacific Avenue in downtown. It's not quite as good as Coffeetopia, but the girl-watching out front can't be beat on the weekends. =)
