First post here. Hey now everyone----- I live in berkeley california and have recently been told by my Doctor I should start drinking one cup of coffee a day. I would like to buy my own beans and grind them as I need them. Half-lb or one lb amounts.... Any advice on where to shop for real good light to medium roast whole beans in or around Berkeley?? Thanks; LSB

Welcome to CoffeeGeek!!
You could not have found a better place to ask this question....and you're pretty fortunate to have some great coffee very nearby in your area. The West Coast is very good for roasteries.
Yes. Blue Bottle and Ritual in San Francisco, and Barefoot in Santa Clara. For your own health, you really must try them all. :-)
But if you ever find yourself in Walnut Creek, there's Pacific Bay Coffee Co.. Maybe you can swing by there the next time you head out to Target or something? Either way, it's worth the trip... and a little bit closer to you than Barefoot.
I first experienced Pacific Bay's coffee (in espresso form) at Barefoot Coffee Roasters. Andy can correct me on this, but I believe they were one of their first "guest espresso" partners.
Guest espresso. Love it. Love it. Love it. Sheer brilliance. Anyway...
During the Western Barista Guild Jam I had the opportunity to meet the owners of Pacific Bay Coffee, and they are as lovely and wonderful as the coffee beans they roast. I'm serious. Try them.

It looks like everyone answered this. BlueBottle or Sweet Marias are probably closest to you and you can just pick up fresh roasted coffees w/out shipping if you time it right.
The main question I had for you is which doctor recommended you to drink a cup a day, and what for? I need to switch doctors! Maybe I can start using my health flexible spending account to pay for my coffee habit ;)
Rawman the Expobarbarian.. AKA the Original Jon R.
My nephrologist DR. Hector Santiestaban. I do Home hemo dialysis cause my kidneys don't work. I do it six days a week for eight hours each treatment. I take off about 2kgs of fluid each treatment, that is around 4/5lbs. This drys me out and constipates me terribly. He suggested that since recent information claims that drip coffee is perfectly safe when consumed within reasonable amounts,ie. cup a day. That I should try adding a cup a day to help with regularity. I am not a regular coffee drinker, but I have been known to enjoy a dry cap here and there. Now I am saving those for special occassions. It is drip joe for me for now on. Hope this helps some.. Peace; LSB add on; I just bipped over to blue bottle and picked up a lb of the Bella donovon. Wow! what a great cup of coffee. Strong, but not bitter, smooth and chocolaty Yum yum super good
