Big Sur is my second home and I'm down there all the time. If by any chance you'll be passing through the San Jose area on the way to Carmel/Monterey, then stop by Barefoot Coffee Roasters in Santa Clara. Not only would you have the opportunity to enjoy some of the best coffee in the world, but pickin's are slim to none down in Carmel/Monterey. I wish I could recommend any of the independent cafes/roasters down there, but they don't seem to understand coffee the way we seem to understand coffee. Who cares if coffee is 'organic' or 'free trade' if they have no clue how to roast or prepare it. It's not 1980 any more, silly hippies.
There's a Starbucks in the El Monte Shopping Center in Monterey. Bon Appetit. ;-)
Actually, Barefoot would still be along the way there if you're driving down to Monterey/Carmel from San Francisco. Stop by if you can as they do make great espresso there. More likely, you'll be busy on the road driving since it's a good 3 or more hours away I believe.
Can't say that I could recommend a good coffee shop to you in that area, but there is a great breakfast place in Monterey called First Awakenings. It's very close to the Monterey Aquarium, so I'd recommend stopping by there if you get the chance. Everything on the menu looked great. Had the Eggs Benedict and they were to die for. Yum! Makes me wish I could go again sometime soon :)
As has been pointed out, you're in luck! Take 280 South, then get off at the Lawrence Expressway exit in Cupertino/Santa Clara. Barefoot is a great place to make a short, coffee-related pit stop before heading further south to Monterey.
I used to barista at Morgan's Coffee and Tea in Monterey, which used to be THE coffee house in Monterey in the late 90s. Heard Morgan sold it, anyone know the sitch with this place?
