I see a brief writeup in the San Francisco Chronicle that mentions it is supposed to have opened yesterday (Wednesday).  There is a longer write-up and beautiful photographs of their Japanese siphon bar in the New York Times.

But all is quiet here on CoffeeGeek.  Even Blue Bottle's own website says they are open.  C'mon, somebody has surely been there.

[edited to add:] I just noticed Greg Sherwin's excellent trip report here.

And I thought that my Cona was spendy.
Another fabulous addition to the culinary delights in the city by the bay.

I might check it out tomorrow -- looks like there'll be a bigger crowd than usual because of the vac-pot publicity. I'm just as interested in having a shot pulled from their La San Marco macchina, actually.

Ciao,
Wayne

I just got back from my first  trip to bluebottle café. I posted on the other thread regarding BB. Let me just say that this place is out of this world good!!! There was a line out the door which was kind of surprising given it's location and it being the weekend. Wayne, I did have a shot pulled off of the San Marco and it was really good.

The Siphon bar was a trip to watch and truth be told, most of the people were drinking that coffee.  They have their own pastry chef, they are going to do a poached egg breakfast daily and plan on doing some wine and cheese tastings at night. What more do you need? I think I might just take up residency  with some of the locals(The location is one block off the skiddiest of skid row) so I can be first in line every day.

Wow, sounds like a step forward for cafe/coffee culture. Perchè non? The more artisan micro-roasters with top-notch cafes, the better. Maybe that's what it takes to establish a real cafe scene like what the Parisians have enjoyed for decades. More power to them! (I'll visit on a weekday, when it might be less jammed, I hope.)

I had a double espresso which had low body but nice complexity. Ristrettos I've had at the Blue Bottle kiosk on Linden street were much better.

The Siphon bar is amazing to watch. In the left photo James places a flask with grounds on top of the bottom glass globe filled with hot water which is heated by the lamps. The water vapor pressure forces the hot water up the funnel into the upper flask where the coffee is brewed. Notice in middle photo that there is no hot water left in the right bottom globe. It is all in the upper flask brewing the coffee. The halogen lamp heater is turned off and a vacuum is formed in the lower glass globe which siphons the brewed coffee back down into the lower globe (photo on right). Very interesting to watch. I didn't get to try the coffee. It was super busy at Blue Bottle cafe.
