I was on a business trip in Portland for a few days and I was able to visit a few of the recommended coffee houses.

The espresso at Ristretto Roasters was a nice fruity shot.

Fresh Pot @ Mississippi uses Stumptown Hairbender to pull shots. The espresso was bright, fruity with chocolate and complexity. Nice shot. Really enjoyed it.

Blue Gardenia on Mississippi is just 1.5 blocks from Fresh Pot. The 2oz double at Blue Gardenia was not ground to order and was pulled in about 18 seconds. Espresso was very hot, had no body and was slightly burned. I like espressos at Starbucks better.

Stumptown Hairbender ristretto at the Albina Press was super bright with minor complexity. Beans were a bit too fresh. They pulled me another shorter ristretto which was sweeter and with improved complexity.

I got a very good Hairbender shot at Stumptown @ Belmont which was bright, fruity with chocolate and complexity.

At the Stumptown @ Division the Hairbender shot was also bright and complex. I went back a few days later and the ristretto had lots of chocolate with very nice complexity. Possibly best shot I had on this trip to Portland. Check this link for a PNW ristretto trip report I had in August 2007. http://coffeegeek.com/forums/worldregional/uswest/312910

Of the six coffee houses I visited in February 2008 none of them pulled SO shots which is unfortunate. In the San Franciso Bay Area I can get SO shots at Barefoot, Blue Bottle, JavaJ, Lulu's and Verve.

While at Ristretto Roasters I bought the famous Ethiopian Idido Misty Valley beans. Pulled these shots with 199F brew water six days after roast. Very dark crema with thick body. I got tobacco, spice and other flavors. Very nice unique after taste. I never tried these beans before so I don't know what to expect. Will be fun to play with these beans.

In October 2007, I pulled shots with the Paradise Roasters non-action Esmeralda which I liked a lot. I didn't like the auction Esmeralda from Intelligentsia. While I was at Stumptown @ Belmont I bought some non-auction Esmeralda and seven days after roast used 194F brew water to pull 2oz, 1.5oz and 1oz shots with it (in that order, beans need a very fine grind). The 1.5oz double tasted the best, very nice quality fruity taste with smooth body.
