Mark,

If you are in SF again, go to Blue Bottle and get their Roman Espresso blend and their single origin Natural Koratie (not washed).  Best coffees I'm drinking right now.  Supposedly, Blue Bottle will have Chapada Diamantina back soon...my favorite bean I've ever had.

Best coffee I've ever brewed at home still comes from Blue Bottle....I cannot wait to see what 4 Barrel does to that statement.

If I ever pick up some lifesaver again, I'll definitely try brewing it hotter and more ristretto. Thanks for the tip.

Cole espresso is ok. Definitely not the best I've ever had. But it gets the job done. I've only really been blown away by two espresso blends before- Hairbender and from Zoka, Paladino. I just didnt get that from the hairbender that I got from 4 barrel. I dont know why, it shouldn't be any different than the beans I used to get in the pac-northwest.

The next time I'm mindlessly wandering around the city (which is pretty often), I'll stop by blue bottle and pick up some beans. I'll be sure to try it there too to have some kind of benchmark.

I too am excited to try what 4 barrel will be roasting once they're up and running. They probably aren't accepting credit cards because of the processing costs. It catches you off guard the first time, but its not a big deal. They also don't have wi-fi in the shop, which I think is kind of nice because people won't turn the place into an office.

They've been roasting for about a week now!

Their signature blend is called, get this: Friendo Blendo.  Hasn't been the friendliest to my Alexia at home, but it's really good when they are pulling it, similar to Hairbender in texture.  A bit smoother than Hairbender, not quite as stanky.  I was told to pull Friendo at lower temps than Hairbender,  aiming for 199-200 at the group.  If I can somehow get Jeremy to tell me what he's doing backstage with his pre-infusion, maybe my shots will come out more like theirs.  I guess he has some secret pre-infusion thing he rigged up.

I made it to Four Barrel on February 27 and had this espresso pulled with their own roasted blend. Nice chocolate with berry and a nice long finish. Still not much body but I do like it better than Hairbender shots.

Jeremy inspecting green beans that just arrived at Four Barrel. He told me that small batches of green beans are roasted in their four barrel roaster.

Four press pots brewing. Music from a turntable. Bit freaky.

Chris Baca pouring latte art. I had this Vitamin D espresso. I don't like the name because when I drink espresso I don't want to think about drinking vitamins. Shot didn't work for me, too tangy.

Also had this fantastic Brasil S.O. espresso. Very nice amazing S.O shot. Table was set up for a 1pm cupping at Ritual.
