I worked with Ryan for a bit at Peets. I came home to find out after visiting the store that he was running a shop and roasting plant in Santa Cruz.

As long as O'Deezy is at the wheel of Verve, you can always expect world class coffee.

At Fins they use Malabar Gold to pull espressos. They are a bit inconsistent but they are able to pull really nice shots with it. Last time I was there they were selling beans from Victrola. I bought a bag of Harrar.

Shots pulled at home with Victrola Harrar beans that I bought at Fins in Santa Cruz. Very nice tasty shots with lots of body.

The Streetlevel espresso blend from Verve Coffee Roasters in Santa Cruz was available this weekend at both Barefoot and Bellano. Both coffee houses are only 1.5 miles apart on Stevens Creek blvd in Santa Clara.

This Streetlevel shot at Barefoot tasted sweet and fruity. The after-taste had chocolate flavor.

Streetlevel shot at Bellano, which was pulled on a Synesso, had mostly chocolate flavor. So I had a nice Verve Streetlevel espresso at both Barefoot and Bellano but if I didn't know they were using the same Streetlevel blend I wouldn't have guessed it. Makes me feel better if shots I pull at home taste different than shots at a coffee house where I got the beans from.

I've been enjoying the Streetlevel blend and usually stop by for a shot and pick some up when I'm in SC. Verve is already one of my all-time favorite shops. The vibe is chill, the staff is friendly, and the shots and capps are consistently excellent.
My one visit to Bellano left me disappointed. The shot was just okay. I can't remember what blend they were serving.

Has anyone been to The Ugly Mug in downtown Soquel?  I heard of this place recently but have not visited yet.  They say all the right things on their website.

Many independent coffee houses love to bash Starbucks. Reviews on yelp don't reveal much. But according to this blog from Tim it is not good. A 2.5oz single that tasted smoky. Tim understands espresso very well and has been a judge at the Western Regional Barista Competition.
