I didn't know that! Very cool! I liked how she got the team to pitch in on the support/sponsorship. They'd stand out in front of the shop during the business rush to work, and offer free cups 'o' joe for commuters. My buds remarked that quite a few of the folk that lived and worked in the area took a bit of convincing that it was a free cup of coffee. The also said that they got over the top favorable responses, so she's doing something right!

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the closure of one of the potential greats, and quite possibly the best place in Tucson to get great coffee. 'The Vein' has a thank you note attached to the dark, and locked front door, citing lack of economic success as the reason for their closure. It's a sad and dark day. I hope that I can make the announcement that they're back and doing great, but it doesn't sound as if that is on the horizon. Cross your fingers, kids.
The third and fourth posts on this topic discuss a few places within a short drive of the Chandler area. Phoenix is a bit like LA in that that is not really unusual. Everyone drives everywhere. The two latter cafes that Stephen mentions in his post back there are not in the Chandler area, but are further N and W. The first three, however, are fairly close, as is the Ray road cafe I mentioned. A Google Maps search of 'Chandler AZ espresso' will get you a few hints. dubba-dubba-dubba-dot arizona-coffee dot-com might lend a few more clues as well.

Grinders in Phoenix at Central and Dunlap (southeast plaza).
The shop is small and they tend to close too early in my estimate, but Dennis is a great guy and a good roaster. He bought the 15lb roaster of another now out of business roaster from Glendale, and he's roasting some for other local businesses.
That Cabin Coffee is close to my house, I'll check them out this week sometime.

Has anyone been to Ground Control in Goodyear? I think it's the closest place to me on the Goodyear/Buckeye border. I'd really like to find a place to see what a proper espresso is like.

Ground Control on one side, Memphis BBQ on the other. Dang, are you lucky. I've never been to GC, but since they're getting last years US Barista Champion to come ion and school them, it indicates that they are seriously committed. Either they do a great job and will soon do better, or they do OK and will soon be great. Go try one now, and then go try one after June tenth, and compare the differences.

Thanks Psyd, I think I'm going to go by GC tomorrow morning and get one. Funny you should mention Memphis BBQ, my folks found out about the place last month when they were here visiting and told me about it. They were actually referred there by 5395 Soul Food Street in Avondale, both are great places.
I've definately gotta hit Memphis sometime soon as Q is one of my staple foods. :) (Which reminds me, its time to smoke some more pork butt, I'm almost out.)
Some folk don't know the difference between barbecue and burning meat. Sticking a hunk of meat covered in spices and sauce into a fire is something that we've had since apes left the trees. Barbecue is an art-form initiated in the Caribbean and perfected in Germany.
