The Honolulu Coffee Co. has several locations, including a kiosk on the third level of the Ala Moana Shopping Center. They have a 2-group LM Linea (3-group?), and all the accoutrements, gelato, and all the rest . . .
Had a straight espresso -- feh! -- but their iced coffee (actually made an espresso, with cold water added, then poured over ice) was actually pretty good. By far, the best coffee I had in Hawai'i, which -- clearly -- is a city with lots of room for improvement in the espresso arena . . . .
I was at the mall in the evening, and popped into the HCC store. The store had a lot customers at tables - all with to-go cups. I milled around checking out the beans on the shelves, no 'Roasted On' dates. There was a nice Synesso sitting idle, and I couldn't muster up the courage to try a shot. I passed by the cart on the way out and still couldn't do it. I'm sure there's a better vibe earlier in the day.
I had satisfying espresso and bought workable beans at Glazers (University & King). That kept the espresso monkey calm.
That brings back good memories of morning coffee at the HCC in Waikiki last year. Despite decent baristas and a 3-group Mistral, their Kona coffee was much better suited to drip than espresso. ____ John
