I've been at this for 3 years now, mostly online, and last Sunday stepped up to a booth at a local Farmers Market! Pretty weird, considering I found this place years ago when I was looking to buy a home espresso machine, and bought Silvia, long before I apprenticed as a roaster. It went really well, seeing as it was my first time ever doing anything like it, and it was a slow holiday weekend.

I'm using a cone drip station from www.espressoparts.com . Expensive as hell, but worth the dough, as it looks great, spawned a lot of curiosity, and functioned flawlessly. For hot water, I'm using two Zojirushi electric hot water urns in rotation, which functioned really well. With a 4 cup capacity, it works pretty well, and I'll admit I was worried about the wait time, but people are mostly mesmerized by the process.

I was serving Kenya Kangocho and Costa Rica La Minita. We served around 90 cups of coffee. People's responses were very positive, only 2-3 neutral responses, and the rest were 'Oh WOW!' type stuff. It was great fun meeting my customers, as opposed to online service only.

Here's a pic:

Hey Nate! Congrats on the booth I wish I had known I would have stopped by. Are you also selling your wonderful espresso blend at the market? Lastly, is that the market on Pico and 20 something?

Say, by Super J do you mean Super Jolly and if so does it allow you be WDT free? (See my thread at HB and post) ;-)

Regards,
Ed

Congrats, Nate!

Here in SF, I've heard a few customers at Blue Bottle say "eh, whatever" to cups of coffee that I thought were delicious.  It's hard to please everyone I guess.  Keep doing what you're doing!

Keep us up to date.

edwa, I only will be selling 2 coffees each time, mainly to keep it simple. I brew either on request. Which brings me to a question for the 'geeks here:

I roasted the beans the day before, and I'm serving the same batches for brewed coffee as I'm selling by the lb. Serving coffee the day after roasting is not ideal, but it's worth it for freshness sake. In the interest of efficiency, I ground small amounts of each coffee into separate containers, and dosed into the cones from there. I'm very comfortable with that, as it's 'too' fresh, I'm not brewing espresso, and I guarantee you no one will taste a difference in the cup. My question is: would it turn any of you off to see this, even if the cup you received was outstanding? Just curious.

Galtman, yes, that's the one. :-)

Congrats Nate!.. I wouldn't be too bothered by it depending.. How often are you grinding..  Are you grinding for the whole day, or just grinding every once in a while to replenish the small containers?

I may ask you if I saw what looked like pre ground, but if you explained 1/2 an hr it wouldn't bother me a bit.

edwa, I just realized I didn't answer your question. No, I probably won't be selling my Torro at the market, unless/until I pick up an espresso machine.
