How about this - you be the roaster. Green beans ship better and keep longer. You'll save on the cost of beans, and on the shipping price/lb since you can order in larger quantities than fresh roasted beans. This site has a lot of good info, and roasting is not that hard.

http://www.sweetmarias.com/

There are different ways you can roast the beans. For rather inexpensive methods check out using an air popcorn popper (available at thrift stores or perhaps JC Penny) or Whirlypop (available at Sur La Table in Las Vegas).

I'm new to it and still learning the nuances, but so far it's working well. An air popper is good way to learn.

I've only been there once, but it seems like the kind of place I wouldn't mind opening the window in all year long.  Is buying a Behmor 1600 and roasting your own out of the question?

It's definitely not out of the question, but i'm not yet confident enough to do that.

I only just started drinking coffee this year, and have been trying to learn as much as I can in the meantime.  Lately all i've been using is an Aeropress and a Keurig B70 single serve machine.  I'll have my Baratza Vario soon (first big coffee-related investment).  I realized it was important to invest in a good grinder first.  I've never owned an espresso machine, but figured i'd skip past the Sylvia and get the Alex Duetto II later (when budget permits).

I think once I have some experience buying various beans and making my own espresso, i'll have enough confidence to start doing my own roasting.

Hi Jason,

If you can pop popcorn in a popcorn popper, heat up a pizza slice or whatever in a toaster oven or the like., you can roast your own awesomely fresh coffee & there is just no going back once you taste the results & just get into it!

You won't regret a decision to get a Behmor 1600 in your future, trust me! {;-D

I had issues with the coffee I got from them last time.  I spoke to the roaster (my buddy would not let me not talk to him) and discussed the type of roast I like, the fact that I use them for espresso, and that I'm a bit more fanatical about freshness than probably 95% of his customers.  What he chose for me was rather over-roasted for my tastes, and wouldn't generate but a bit of crema.
Could very well have been my technique, but I haven't had those issues with coffees form Luce here in town, or the CCC, Blue Bottle, PT's, or Barefoot coffees, so I just generally took a pass.  This was about a year ago, so...

There are cheaper shipping alternatives.
In fact Klatch click here has a free shipping special when purchasing $50.
Thats 3 #s and maybe a mug, or another 1/2 lb.
If you're dedicated, you'll get through the 1st Lb in a week.
Why not take the other 2 sealed bags, encase them in zip lock freezer bags, and freeze them till you need them?
Even this method of freezing will give you better coffee than your local stuff (according to Jason)
There are several roaster's such as Caffe Fresco, Veltons Coffee, and others that offer cheaper shipping alternatives.

Of course, you can always try roasting your own.

Didn't see your post, Craigo!
Ya beat me to the "home roasting punch."

Shipping is never a fun thing, but I endure it so I can enjoy coffee from the pros. Gives me something to shoot for with my home roasts.
ASfx, hang in there. Jason, would you have time to post your excellent list of Roasters you posted a while back on another thread?
Dang, I should have "Command D'd it"...yeah, I'm a Mac dude now.

I'm going to repeat the call for doing your own roasting. Confidence be damned. I myself never thought I could roast, I found however that an air popper is, while not optimal, an easy way to learn and get a very acceptable fresh roast.

Your investment will be very small. I was at Fry's electronics and noticed they carried an air popper ( with vented chamber ) for ~$15. That, some green beans, and just a bit of reading (Sweet Maria's site has good info, and links), and you are on your way. Tryyyy it, you'll liiiike it.

WE'RE OFF TOPIC HERE...but...

Poppers can be found for $4-5 in thrift shops.
Just remember, the vents need to be on the sids, not the bottom.
However, if your roasting for espresso, (IMO) the roasts are too quick, too bright for espresso consumption, UNLESS they are heavily modified to slow down the roasts, etc.

Much simpler would be the Convection oven combo, Behmor, etc.
As price was mentioned, the Stir crazy (or Salton bottom) and a Sunpentown convection top can be had for around $85 shipped.
$10 for a springform pan (spacer),copper top and wingnut, etc would do it.
It is very easy to disconnect the heating element on the popper.
---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------
Still, there is coffee to be had, =roasted by pros that can often be shipped for less than $5.

I am looking for an opportunity to buy a coffee roasting company in the Las Vegas or SoCal area.  Looking for at least one small batch commercial roaster and coffee shop/s and/or the warehouse with roasting equipment.  Please feel free to contact me.
I am a longtime coffee roaster (engineer) with major global coffee company looking to relocate to Las Vegas or SoCal and market the best roasted coffee!  Just looking for a small % of the market not to become the next SBUX, Peet's or Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.  But I know the secrets to make coffee just as great or better!
