My daughter heard about this Ethiopian Restaurant that roasts it's own beans. She has not yet been there and is not as picky as some, especially Gary.

Wondered if he, or anyone else, has ever been there.

Been there, done that. I haven’t eaten at an Ethiopian restaurant for years so that was fun to have that experience again. Still tricky to eat without knife and fork and pick up the food with your fingers only.

I ordered the National dish of Ethiopia. I had it with an imported Ethiopian beer.

Doro Wot: the National Dish of Ethiopia. The chicken tasted like chicken, the hard boiled egg tasted like a hard boiled egg, the pepper sauce reminded me of Indian food, the Maskal Teff bread felt and tasted like rubber, and the Ethiopian beer tasted like beer.

At Walia they roast their own Ethiopian Sidamo beans. Ground coffee beans are put inside this pretty clay pot, warm water is added and the clay pot is placed on a stove till the water comes to a boil!. After steam comes out of the pot's mouth, the clay pot is removed from the stove and the coffee is allowed to cool for 5 to 10 minutes while the grounds slowly sink to the bottom. This Ethiopian Sidamo coffee had mainly dark chocolate flavor with a hint of carbon and some burned flavor similar to what you get when a pot of coffee sits on the heater a bit too long. That took away my desire to buy some roasted beans to brew coffee with at home.

Thanks.

I rarely hear of a restaurant who roasts their own so was wondering. I love Ethiopian food if done right and my daughter lived in that part of Oakland for 2 years where there were Ethiopian restaurants on every corner and she loves it. We'll probably go when I head up there later this month.

you think the burnt flavor was the beans? not the preparation method?

My meal was bland and boring, but Walia does get consistently good ratings on yelp. My brother went to UC berkeley, located next to Oakland, and I did have a good meal at an Ethiopian restaurant there. I think the coffee preparation method caused the slight burned flavor. The waiter described the coffee brew method in detail but never volunteered any information about the coffee flavor profile. That made me wonder about the quality of the roasted coffee beans.

So Gary, in San Jose proper, where are the 2-3 must go to places? I want a short list because if I drag my daughter to too many coffee places she'll not be happy, but a few good ones she'll enjoy.

(I have Verve and Lulu's on the list for when we go over to Santa Cruz).

In San Jose proper, there really are only three places.
Bellano Coffee ("B2" - as it is the second location), 170 West St. John Street (inside the San Pedro Square Market)
Red Berry Coffee Bar, 231 East Santa Clara Street
Top Nosh Cafe, 1167 Lincoln Ave.

If you want to expand your search into neighboring towns (Santa Clara, Campbell, Cupertino, etc), the list expands.

I don't know what she has planned. I know we are going to Santa Cruz, hence Verve and Lulu's. But It is only a long weekend, so I'm somewhat limited.

Still I hope there are places she hasn't been to yet. That's always fun.
