Hi. I live in Los Angeles and recently became interested in higher quality coffee.
After years of buying Maxwell House and chugging it just for the caffeine, I decided to try to find out why there are so many coffee aficionados in the world.
I have my Chemex, burr grinder, filters, electric kettle, but no beans! I've heard of places like LA Mill or Inteligentsia, but they're a bit far from where I live, though I'd make a trip if I can't find other places.
Where should I go to buy some good beans and what kinds should I try?

Hello, and welcome.
Those are both good bets, and both in LA. Handsome downtown is a good roaster (but OTOH not that far from Silver lake). What part of town are you trying to stick to?

Where in LA do you live?
Some that immediately come to mind:
If youre near Culver City, check out Cognoscenti Coffee. They have many different roasters available.
Closer to hollywood, there is Single Origin/Short Cake at the Farmer's Market/The Grove. Always stocked with many varieties of Verve coffee.
Little Tokyo/Downtown there are many options. Demitasse(little tokyo) partnered with Trystero(forum member, i think here and HB), Handsome Coffee Roasters on Mateo in the Artist's District of downtown, Cafe Dulce has Stumptown and Verve.
Silverlake has Intelligentsia, Cafecito Organico, Caffe Vita(not open yet but i think they have a pop-up next door at Rudy's Barbershop), G&B and im sure some others that im forgetting.
