I heard on the radio this morning that statistics released by the SCAA show that my hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico has the highest number of "specialty coffee shops" per capita of any city in the US.
I guess by many standards this would be considered good news, however the bad news is that it's been my experience that the quantity of shops available has done nothing for the quality of coffee available.
I'm not sure what this says about the coffee industry in general. I know that you don't have to look too hard on Amazon to find a handful of books on how to start and run a "successful" coffee business, but they are only applying the term successful to the bottom line. I imagine that many of the shops here use that same benchmark of success (though who can blame them).
Just an observation.

P.S. If anyone knows of a shop in Albuquerque that makes espresso to coffee geek standards, I would love to know about it.

Who are they kidding? I found 0, not one, absolutely no good place for a decent espresso! I didn't see much in the way of any kind of specialty coffee shops at all.

You need to go south 200 miles to Las Cruces: Milagro Espresso y Cafe run by alt.coffee regular Bernie Digman is the class of New Mexico. Taos roasters in Taos is also rated fairly good. Albuquerque itself seems to be bereft of "guide coffeegeek" stars.
