The cream will rise in battle of baristas

Wake up. The next contest worth your attention may be no farther than your morning cup of coffee. It's the Battle of the Baristas, pitting entrants from 14 independent cafes in the Peninsula and South Bay in ``Iron Chef''-style coffee-making competition. The winner gets to claim the title of Bay Area's Best Barista (well, our part of the area anyway). According to Mike Ferguson, spokesman for the Specialty Coffee Association of America, the Bay Area is the birthplace of specialty coffee retailing in North America. We'll see how special when the competing baristas each turn out two espressos, two cappuccinos and two signature drinks of their own creation for a panel of judges that includes local chefs. The highly caffeinated competition opens Saturday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Global Blends Coffee Co. in Mountain View. The final two rounds will be Nov. 13 and 20, both at Barefoot Coffee Roasters in Santa Clara. The field includes baristas from both cafes, of course, plus entrants from Lowry's Irish Coffee House, Coupa Cafe, Los Gatos Coffee Roasting, Orchard Valley Coffee Roasting, Blue Rock Shoot, Cool Beans, City Lights Espresso, Red Rock Coffee, Dana St. Coffee Roasters, Coffee Society and Bean Scene. Just don't expect any entrants from the 800-pound gorilla on the scene. Starbucks doesn't stoop to enter such competitions. http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/10106180.htm

Well the first BAttle of the Baristas was a super fun time! Even though only three Baristas competed from three different cafes it was still a super good time and very educational. Each Barista used different espresso beans, different techniques and different drinks.
The competitors were:
Kelly Price representing Global Blends in Mountain View Eton Tsuno representing his own company Etoniq Espresso Hector Ugueto representing Coupa Cafe in Palo Alto
These Baristas were true ambassadors of the craft and were super fun to watch and the drinks were amazing! Great job all the way to all three. In the end the race was amazingly close with only a total of 7 points separating all three out of 140 possible. Here is the ranking:
Third place Hector Ugueto Second place Kelly Price First place! Eton Tsuno!! (won by a single point over Kelly!)
Congrats Eton! The finals on the 20th will be super intense! Photos will be coming soon!
Also a little shout out: Eton was pouring Sweetness! from the Barefootians! Go Sweetness!

Thanks for the Congrats Andy! Couldnt have done it without Sweetness!
The competition was a blast! It was def an experiance well worth it!
Loved seeing Kelly and Hector both astonishing baristas I might ad...The presentation of Kellys Capps was amazing (rosetta inside apple) and Hectors art on his mocha's was very cool! Personally....I still wish I could do art as well as these two and still get enough foam in the cup! )
Im looking forward to the pictures from the competition and THE FINALS!!
Anyways....gotta go think of a new signature drink........
