Seattle, WA - September 23, 2012 - One of America’s Best Espressos is roasted right here in Canada! Gino Rutigliano, of Bowen Island Roasting Co. brought the 3rd place trophy back to Canada in America’s Best Espresso competition. The small island coffee roaster has proven big flavour in their 100% organic “Valhalla Espresso Royale” blend. One of only two Canadian coffee roasters selected to compete in the coffee city of America at Seattle’s Coffee Fest Show.
Out of all the amazing roasters eligible to compete, only 32 semifinalists were chosen. The competition kicked off on Friday, September 21, at 12:30pm and continued in a head-to-head bracket style elimination finishing on Sunday, September 23. The winning roaster was announced alongside Coffee Fest’s Latte Art World Championship Open and America’s Best Coffeehouse competitors Sunday at 4:05pm.
Within the specialty coffee industry there is nothing more stimulating than an excellent cup of coffee paired with friendly competition, and America’s Best Espresso Competition is all that and more. This competition is like nothing seen before, focusing exclusively on the dedicated skill and talent needed to produce excellent espresso roasts and blends. This addition to the Coffee Fest experience is unique because the application to compete was open exclusively to roasters.
The 3 finalists:
1st Place - Blue Star Coffee Roasters Twisp WA
2nd Place - Conduit Coffee Company Seattle WA
3rd Place - Bowen Island Roasting Co. Ltd Bowen Island BC
The espresso roaster themselves (or a representative barista) prepared three shots of espresso to be submitted to the judging table. The Washington Restaurant Association provided restaurateurs and chefs to perform to arduous task of judging the competition. Judges evaluated the shots of espresso from each competitor in the categories of:
1) Flavor & Complexity
2) Mouth Feel
You can try this award winner at Rutigliano’s espresso bar at The BowenCoffee Store on Bowen Island. If you are lucky enough he may even be there to pull the shot! Or take it home from any Whole Foods Markets and other select organic stores. More info, list of stores or order online, please see www.bowencoffee.ca
