Perfect design for what it is; an easily-stored, compact and stylish knockbox intended for low volume home use.
Positive Product Points
Small form factor is perfect for those looking for a knockbox which won't dominate one's countertop space, designed to rest on drip tray when not in use. Wide variety of colors available (but I went with basic black to conceal puck mess). Great value and virtually indestructible (so far).
Negative Product Points
Though it was a strength for me, this is small and not the knockbox for a barista banging out more than 5-6 shots at one session. Likewise, it is modern in appearance and might not appeal to those looking to impress with wood and chrome.
Detailed Commentary
The pro review on this site is spot on -- the Grindenstein is a great knockbox, but it's only potential drawback is it's small size. For me, size was a positive and the deciding factor in my purchase. My espresso set up consists of a Rancilio Rocky and La Pavoni Pro. I like to keep thing simple, and my wife does not like it when coffee gear takes over our kitchen. When I was looking for a new knockbox, the offerings seemed to be geared to commercial use and were ugly and cheap looking. Reg Barber's is beautiful, but much too big for my needs. The Grindenstein is perfect for me. My La Pavoni lever machine needs a rest to cool down after 3-4 shots anyway, so I never feel that I'm going to overflow the Grindenstein with spent pucks. Likewise, my 51mm portafilter fits just fine, with no splashing (I can't speak to 58mm results). The best part is that this takes up very little room when not in use (can sit on drip trays), and looks great. If Bodum made a knockbox, it would have been the Grindenstein -- that's a compliment in my opinion, though some might disagree!
I gave it 10's across the board, because I really can't find fault in any area with respect to my needs/ usage. But someone coming from a different perspective could have just as easily given out 5's for Usability or Aesthetics and be equally sincere. It all comes down to "horses for course," "the right tool for the right job," etc. For what it is, a small knockbox designed for light (volume, as abuse isn't an issue) home use, it's basically perfect. Anyone using a single boiler machine won't overwhelm the Grindenstein, but if you're making 10 espressos in 30 minutes, you might be better served elsewhere as the Grindenstein was not designed with you in mind.
