Great machine that is reliable and steady. Quality for the money and a rotary pump upgrade for the EBII is a MUST!
Positive Product Points
Everything. This machine is wonderful for boiling water, powerful steam wand, shots you can pull one right after the other...i just wish someone offered a service where a barista would come to my house and help me learn or at least re-inforce what I am doing/my technique! And if you hav an EB2, get get get the rotary pump modification upgrade, even if you hav to deal with WLL to get it done, do it. It's WELL worth the $$
Negative Product Points
If service is an issue, make sure you deal with the right company. Unfortunately only WLL is the only one I know of who works on these, besides your local shop or a guy who "does mod's on the side"... so I'd still go with WLL, even with their smart-mouthed, know-it-all kids on the customer service phone lines...their tech's seem to get the job done, at least they did when Don was still there...
Detailed Commentary
My EB2 is an awesome machine. It took me awhile to get used to it, but all in all I hav to rate this machine a 9. It is easy to handle, with separate boilers lending fast boiling water, lots of power in the steam wand, and shots that are easy to pull one after another.
I bought my machine used ($900) on eBay, and was lucky to get it almost-new since the previous owner was a Dr. and was very honest about it’s condition (she had hardly used it). Within a year though I sent it to WLL for a rotary pump modification upgrade. The head guy there (Don) is no longer there! He was wonderful, and some remaining problems hav STILL not been dealt with by the staff when I call (one kid even hung up on me) with messages which are not given to mgmt, or even when I ask for voice mail (and am transferred to another smart-mouthed kid who says he’s “in sales”)..I then again ask that my phone number be given to a service mgr. to call me…but to date hav still not received a response..which is severely disappointing, but this is not the first time I hav heard this about WLL. I wish Don were still there because he would return my calls, everytime (even when I was going through personal family, health-related issues and had to drop everything and fly 5 states away, and I didn’t even return his for a month). What a great guy he was and a huge loss for WLL. He was knowledgeable and thorough, and I wish him only the best.
To be honest, I hav nothing else to compare my EB2 to (it’s my first machine) I will say that the espresso I pull from it gets rave reviews from espresso-only drinkers to milk-capp/latte lovers alike.
The rotary modification took some getting used to because it is faster, but the machine runs like a champ. I hav a Mazzer mini stepless grinder w/a doser and buy my beans from INTELLIGENTSIA.com. INTELLIGENTSIA.com sends my beans to me within 24 hours of roasting them. Yum. Service and product, you can’t ask for better than INTELLIGENTSIA.com, so if you are looking for an excellent source for beans, check out their Black Cat espresso roast..heaven!
My EB2 is also plumbed in so I don’t hav to fill the reservoir tank everyday…I just put the (beautiful, quality material) metal-woven tube directly into a 5 gallon jug of (RO purified water) and make sure I check it once/week or so. Sheesh I love that. Large drip tray means I don’t hav to empty it very often..high-rise feet give me room underneath for cord, etc. Everything works, first time, everytime. Just be careful who you send it to, for servicing.
If you are looking for a stable, higher-end quality, one-grouphead machine for easy home use, for the money you really can’t go wrong with this machine. As stated above, I hav to give this one a 9.
Buying Experience
eBay! I hav bought/sold on eBay for over a decade so I know the questions to ask to make sure an item is all it is claimed to be...make sure you pay with a credit card! If it's not all it was touted, you can always by-pass the paypal idiots (if they give you a hard time about it) and just dispute through your credit card company. Make sure you ask questions about anything you buy of this nature when buying on eBay! (Does the water run clear, not dis-colored or brown-ish, etc?) ask about the boiler(s), what comes with it, the condition, asthetics, how long owned, how long used, if it has been stored! All of this will lend to the sellers credibility. Also make sure they hav been trading on eBay awhile..."feedback" numbers under 25 aren't generally very reliable, though I hav purchased smaller priced items from sellers with lower feedback scores with no problems, it always depends on how long they hav been a member..I think there's an article addressing the eBay issue on this site even..make sure you read it! (Read everything!)
