Smart purchase which will avoid the need to upgrade for many years.
Positive Product Points
Andreja looks like a work of art and all parts feel like they are of the highest quality. The no burn steam wand is functional and effective. The drip tray is large and easy to empty. The portafilters (2) are included and are solid. The cup warming top is attractive and useful. All in all, Andreja is built like a tank and adds tremendous beauty to the counter.
Negative Product Points
Adjusting the pressure requires some disassembly. I haven't done this yet and don't think it is difficult but have not wanted to because I don't need much adjustment.
Detailed Commentary
The product arrived safely and was well packaged. The actual box included custom foam inserts which kept the Andreja stable and safe. The whole box was put into a bigger box with foam peanuts surrounding it. I carefully removed it and found a home for it on the granite counter; my wife freaked out at it’s size; that was before adding the grinder. Oh well, she’s the one who suggested that we start drinking espresso after we returned from our vacation in Spain. It was my cue to order what I had been wanting for a long time. Because of it’s beauty, Andreja has been accepted as a permanent resident even by her.
I set the machine up and followed the directions that Chris’s Coffee Service had included (their version, not the manufacturer’s version.) I held my breath as I went through the process of getting it primed for the first time. Andreja did what she was supposed to do and I was in business. As stated earlier, this machine is a thing of beauty and performs as well as it looks.
I have not owned an espresso machine before so I considered many machines before deciding to buy Andreja. I was about to buy a Rancilio Silvia but through my reading, it seemed like many had upgraded from there to other products. I decided to jump right to first class instead.
As a novice, and relying on only what I’ve read for instruction, I started making espresso drinks. Unfortunately I wasted a lot of coffee in the learning process but I’m happy to report that within a relatively short period of time I became pretty good at it. At first I thought that I was not getting enough brew pressure since the gauge was only going to about 4 bars. I sent an e-mail to Chris who had me check it with the blank insert; it read 10 bars. I learned that I was way off on the grind setting. Lesson learned.
Steam pressure is excellent and the no-burn wand has undoubtedly saved me from some pain. It takes a little time and patience to obtain consistency but it is not difficult to get great micro foam. Different types of milk do require slightly different techniques. I usually make espresso drinks in the morning so I added a timer to the mix so that when I get up the machine is warmed up and ready to go. Adding water requires the removal of the cups from the warmer to get to the reservoir. It takes me about 1 minute to fill up and I like to do that first thing so that I am using fresh water every day. I look forward to using the Andreja Premium every day. This was a great purchase!
